Given the extensive amount of international cricket plus the IPL that the Indian players feature in, it is bound that some of them, especially those who bowl, will go down with injuries.
Over the past year, several Indian players have missed marquee events, including the T20 World Cup and important Test matches, owing to injuries and workload management.
The case is the same for the upcoming two-match Test series against Sri Lanka. As many as five Indian players will miss the entire or partial series in Sri Lanka this month.
The India vs Sri Lanka Test series, which is part of the ICC WTC cycle, will begin on August 15 in Galle, and the 2nd Test will be hosted in Colombo.
IND vs SL: 5 Indian Players Who Will Miss Sri Lanka Test Series Due To Injury
Jasprit Bumrah
India have been handed a huge blow as spearhead fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah is ruled out of the Sri Lanka Test tour because of a knee issue.
Bumrah has been tackling a knee injury since the T20 World Cup. He then suffered an impact injury during the 2nd ODI in England, forcing him to miss the 3rd ODI. As per Cricinfo, the BCCI’s medical team has advised not to rush Bumrah back into action as he’s not completely recovered.
Harshit Rana
Harshit Rana has had a frustrating year. He missed the T20 World Cup and the IPL because of a knee injury. He made his comeback in the T20I tour of Ireland and England, where he unfortunately picked up a hamstring injury and thus was not available for selection for the IND vs SL Test matches.
Nitish Kumar Reddy
Nitish Kumar Reddy has seen his workload increase as Team India prepares him as a three-format all-rounder. However, this has put more pressure on his body and resulted in injuries.
The 23-year-old Reddy featured in the ODI series against Afghanistan in June but has been out of action since then owing to a left quadriceps injury.
Akash Deep
Fast bowler Akash Deep has impressed in red-ball cricket, but his body has broken down multiple times in the last couple of years.
His last professional match was in February 2026. He has been laid low since then because of a lower-back stress injury that saw him miss the IPL for KKR, the one-off Test match against Afghanistan, and now the Test series in Sri Lanka.
Washington Sundar
Washington Sundar is being built up by the Gautam Gambhir-led management as a three-format player, though his roles in white-ball cricket have been uncertain. Nonetheless, Sundar is a key cog for the Indian team in the present and in the future, but the all-rounder is currently down with a hamstring injury that he suffered during the ODI series in England.
Due to a hamstring injury, Sundar is reported to be unavailable for selection for the 1st Test against Sri Lanka. The BCCI handed a maiden call-up to Madhya Pradesh off-spinning all-rounder Saransh Jain for the IND vs SL Test series.
Sai Sudharsan
Additionally, the BCCI had marked Sai Sudharsan’s availability for the IND vs SL Test series with the condition that he gets fitness clearance from the CoE in Bengaluru, where he is undergoing rehab for a toe niggle. Sudharsan is said to be recovering well and is likely to feature in the 1st Test in Galle.
