India’s new era in T20Is under Shreyas Iyer began on a shocking note as Ireland registered their maiden T20I series victory over India.
In Belfast last week, the Irish scripted history with wins by 34 runs and one run against the T20 World Cup holders.
The indications of instability and lack of certainty with regard to roles and combinations in the Indian T20I lineup came to the fore when Iyer rang in two changes to the playing XI that went down in the 1st T20I against Ireland. Those changes didn’t make much of a difference as India still ended up losing the 2nd T20I.
Now, onto the English challenge. Reeling off from that defeat, India now take a short flight to England, where Harry Brook’s men will host the Men in Blue for a bumper five-match T20I series, starting on July 1 at the Riverside Ground in Chester-le-Street.
The last meeting between these two sides in the shortest format was an epic one at the semi-final of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 in Mumbai, where India won by only 7 runs when defending 253, escaping a stunning century by Jacob Bethell courtesy of Jasprit Bumrah’s end-overs brilliance.
Bumrah is not present in the squad for the IND vs ENG T20I series, nor is Hardik Pandya.
India are expected to make some changes to the side that lost the 2nd T20I against Ireland.
First, there is the question about the teenage superstar Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, whose exclusion from the T20Is against Ireland left many questioning Iyer and Gambhir.
IND vs ENG: Will Vaibhav Sooryavanshi play against England in 1st T20I?
It is unlikely that Sooryavanshi will make his T20I debut in the first match against England. Assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate said that India will continue to back the top three of Samson, Abhishek, and Kishan, and that Sooryavanshi has to “bide his time and wait” for an opportunity.
With that aside, India’s bowling attack is set to be strengthened as Varun Chakravarthy has landed in England and is expected to play in the 1st T20I against England after missing out on the series in Ireland due to a foot injury.
Chakravarthy is likely to replace Suryansh Shedge, who made his debut in the second T20I in Belfast and didn’t do much of note. Dropping Shedge won’t affect India’s combination much as Harshit Rana has shown enough hitting ability to be playing at No. 8.
Arshdeep Singh and Prince Yadav are expected to be the frontline seamers along with Harshit, with Shivam Dube the pace-bowling all-rounder to boot.
Washington Sundar was dropped in the previous match; he is unlikely to replace Axar Patel, especially given the number of right-handers England have in their lineup.
Unless Sooryavanshi gets in, India’s batting personnel won’t be tinkered with: the trio of Samson-Abhishek-Kishan followed by Iyer, Tilak, Dube, and Axar.
But if young Vaibhav does play, then it will create plenty of conundrums for the management. Because then all other batsmen will be pushed down by one spot, Axar might have to be dropped along with Shedge as Varun is set to return, and Dube will be relied upon to bowl four overs. Making such a wholesale change to the batting order seems implausible at the moment.
