On Thursday, the BCCI revealed the India under-19 squad that will host Australia for both white-ball and red-ball matches next month. One name, though, that was conspicuous by its absence was that of 15-year-old teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.
The Australia under-19 team will tour India next month for three one-day games and two red-ball four-day matches, running from September 18 to October 5.
All three one-day matches and the first red-ball match will be played in Rajkot, while the second four-day fixture will be hosted in Ahmedabad.
The India under-19 squad for the three one-day games includes Anvay Dravid and Aaryavir Sehwag, the sons of former India batsmen Rahul Dravid and Virender Sehwag, respectively.
Lakshya Raichandani is the captain, and Yashbardhan Chauhan is his deputy for the India under-19 vs Australia under-19 one-day series, and their roles are swapped in the red-ball series.
Why Is Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Not Selected For Under-19 Series Against Australia?
Sooryavanshi is part of the India squad for the men’s Asian Games tournament, which will run from September 24 to October 3. Since the Asian Games will coincide with the India under-19 vs Australia under-19 series, Sooryavanshi was not named in the squad for these youth matches against Australia under-19.
Sooryavanshi made his India T20I debut in England in July, replacing Sanju Samson at the top of the order. After failing to cross 15 runs in any of his three innings against England, the left-hander had his first major breakthrough in international cricket in Zimbabwe, where he registered scores of 50, 20, and 81.
Sooryavanshi returned with the Man of the Series award against Zimbabwe for scoring 151 runs at a strike rate of 196.
Sooryavanshi recently appeared in the Duleep Trophy for the East Zone against the Northeast Zone but was dismissed for only 8 runs after hitting two boundaries.
When is India’s next T20I series?
Inda’s next T20I series is against Afghanistan, a three-match series to be played in Delhi on September 13, 15, and 17 before the T20I players fly to Japan for the Asian Games.
Both Sooryavanshi and Samson are part of the Asian Games squad, and it remains to be seen how the team management picks the opening combination. A hint of that could be provided during the Afghanistan series next month.
