Heinrich Klaasen Retires from Test Cricket: South African wicketkeeper-batsman Heinrich Klaasen has announced his retirement from Test cricket and all red-ball at the age of 32.
This retirement from one of the most high-profile cricketers in South Africa is a further indication of Test cricket suffering in the country, with the Cricket South Africa (CSA) board in a dire financial situation.

Heinrich Klaasen, who is one of the most destructive white-ball batters in the world, has played only 4 Test matches in his career from 2019 to 2023. He was not selected in the squad that hosted India recently, with Kyle Verreynne being preferred as the wicketkeeper, but South Africa’s Test coach Shukri Conrad had expressed that Klaasen was in his plans, saying that Klaasen was the “better batter.”
In 4 Test matches, Heinrich Klaasen scored only 104 runs at an average of 13 with the highest score of 35.

With Heinrich Klaasen’s stocks rising in T20 cricket owing to his stunning batting performances in limited-overs formats over the past three years, it doesn’t come as a surprise that the 32-year-old has left red-ball cricket to focus more on his white-ball skills, and stints in T20 leagues around the world.
In his retirement statement, Klaasen said: “After a few sleepless nights wondering if I am making the right decision, I have decided to retire from red-ball cricket. It’s a difficult decision that I have made because it is by far my favorite format of the game. The battles that I faced on and off the field have made me the cricketer I am today. It has been a great journey and I am glad I could have represented my country. My baggy Test cap is the most precious cap I have ever been handed.”
Klaasen will next be seen in the upcoming SA20 league, in which he plays for the Durban Super Giants, before flying to India for the IPL 2024, where he will play for the Surisers Hyderabad.
