His absence robs England not only of their leading wicket-taker in the series (17), but also their form player, having struck his first Test hundred in two years and claimed back-to-back Player-of-the-Match awards. It marks yet another setback in a period already marred by hamstring problems.
Chris Woakes will lead the bowling unit in what will be his most demanding series workload to date. Alongside him are Gus Atkinson, returning from a hamstring layoff, Jamie Overton, playing his second Test in three years, and Josh Tongue, recalled after missing the previous two matches.
The batting order sees Jacob Bethell slotting in at No. 6, with Joe Root and Bethell offering England’s only spin options. Liam Dawson, economical but wicketless in Manchester, is omitted as England prepare for a seamer-friendly Oval pitch.
The reshuffle means England field a seam attack with a combined 18 Test caps outside Woakes, and with Pope again deputising in familiar home surroundings, the side faces a stern challenge to secure the series.
