Australia Squad vs South Africa: Josh Hazlewood and Travis Head come back to Australia’s white-ball squad against South Africa after staying away from the West Indies tour. The pair headline a reconfigured squad as the national selectors continue recalibrating in the wake of several high-profile retirements and amid preparations for a heavy home schedule.
Head and Hazlewood were among several senior players rested from the West Indies tour, alongside Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc, who remain sidelined as part of ongoing workload management. Mitchell Marsh continues as stand-in captain for both the T20I and ODI sides.
The ODI squad sees the first call-up for all-rounder Mitchell Owen, with selectors looking to fill gaps left by the recent exits of Steve Smith and Glenn Maxwell from the 50-over format. Cameron Green returns, while Marnus Labuschagne holds his place despite falling out of favour in the Test side.
Matthew Short, recovering from a minor side strain, features in both squads. With Hazlewood’s return and the T20 squad trimmed to 14 players, there is no room for Jake Fraser-McGurk, Aaron Hardie, Cooper Connolly, or Xavier Bartlett in the shortest format. Lance Morris and Bartlett are called just for One Day Internationals.
“The smaller squad for a home series, along with the return of Travis Head and Josh Hazlewood, see some players not part of this Top End series, but all remain in the frame,” said Chair of Selectors George Bailey. “We expect that to continue through the South Africa matches and beyond, as we balance opportunity with preparation for the Test summer.”
The series will start with two T20Is on August 10 in Darwin, before shifting to Cairns and Mackay for the remaining fixtures.
