The Delhi Premier League (DPL) is a franchise-based T20 cricket tournament organised by the Delhi & District Cricket Association (DDCA). The competition was launched in 2024 to provide Delhi cricketers with a bigger platform and create a stronger pathway from local cricket to domestic and professional cricket.

The league features teams representing different zones of Delhi, including East Delhi, West Delhi, North Delhi, South Delhi, Central Delhi, New Delhi, Outer Delhi and Old Delhi. The tournament combines established domestic players with young cricketers who are looking to gain attention from state selectors and Indian Premier League franchises.

What Is the Delhi Premier League?

The Delhi Premier League is a city-based T20 competition conducted by the DDCA. It was first played in 2024, with eight men’s teams taking part in the inaugural edition.

The tournament was created to support the development of Delhi cricket and give local players regular exposure to franchise-style cricket. It also provides an opportunity for young players to perform alongside experienced names from Delhi’s domestic cricket system.

The first season included a player draft involving 270 cricketers. The league later expanded its structure and continued with eight men’s franchises.

History of the Delhi Premier League

Delhi Premier League 2024

The inaugural DPL season was held in 2024. Eight teams competed for the first championship, with matches played at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi.

The original franchises were:

  • Central Delhi Kings
  • East Delhi Riders
  • New Delhi Tigers
  • North Delhi Strikers
  • Outer Delhi Warriors
  • Purani Dilli 6
  • South Delhi Superstarz
  • West Delhi Lions

East Delhi Riders won the inaugural title. The team became the first champions in DPL history and established an early rivalry with several other franchises from the capital.

The 2024 season also brought attention to several young players, especially Priyansh Arya. Representing South Delhi Superstarz, Arya hit six sixes in one over, producing one of the most memorable batting performances in the league’s early history.

Delhi Premier League 2025

The second edition was played in 2025, with the same eight-team structure.

West Delhi Lions won the title under the captaincy of Nitish Rana. They defeated Central Delhi Kings in the final at Arun Jaitley Stadium.

Rana played a major role in the final, scoring an unbeaten 79 from 49 balls. His innings helped West Delhi Lions secure their first DPL championship. He was also named Player of the Match and Player of the Tournament.

Arpit Rana was the leading run-scorer of the 2025 season, finishing with 495 runs. Money Grewal led the bowling charts with 20 wickets, while Yash Dhull received the Outstanding Performer award.

The 2025 season also marked an expansion in the league’s profile, with more established domestic players joining the teams and a larger audience following the tournament.

Delhi Premier League 2026

The third season was played from July 31 to August 30, 2026. The tournament again featured eight men’s teams, with all matches held at Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi.

The Delhi Premier League 2026 included 40 league-stage matches before the playoffs. The competition followed a longer league format, allowing each team to play more matches before the knockout stage.

South Delhi Superstarz won the 2026 title after defeating Central Delhi Kings by seven wickets in the final. Central Delhi Kings scored 182, but South Delhi chased the target in 18.2 overs.

Anmol Sharma scored 64 during the chase and played a central role in South Delhi’s successful final. The victory gave South Delhi Superstarz their first DPL championship.

The first three editions produced three different champions. East Delhi Riders won the inaugural season, West Delhi Lions lifted the trophy in 2025, and South Delhi Superstarz became champions in 2026.

Delhi Premier League Format

The DPL uses a league-and-playoff structure.

Eight teams compete in the men’s tournament. The teams play league-stage matches before the top sides move into the knockout round.

The 2026 edition featured 40 league matches followed by the playoffs. The knockout stage included the qualifiers, eliminator and final, giving the top teams a chance to reach the championship match.

Each match is played under standard T20 rules. Every side can bat for a maximum of 20 overs, while the bowling team must complete its innings within the required time limit.

The format allows players to experience different match situations, including powerplay batting, middle-over control, death bowling and high-pressure knockout cricket.

Delhi Premier League Teams

The league currently features eight men’s franchises.

Central Delhi Kings

Central Delhi Kings represent the central part of the capital. The team has featured players such as Yash Dhull and Jonty Sidhu.

The franchise reached the 2025 final and again made the title match in 2026. Although it did not win either final, its repeated playoff appearances have made it one of the regular contenders in the early years of the competition.

East Delhi Riders

East Delhi Riders won the inaugural DPL title in 2024.

The team has been associated with players such as Anuj Rawat and Simarjeet Singh. Its first-season success gave the franchise a strong place in the league’s history.

New Delhi Tigers

New Delhi Tigers represent the central administrative and modern areas of Delhi.

The franchise entered the competition with a mixture of young players and experienced domestic cricketers. Himmat Singh has been one of the notable names connected with the team.

North Delhi Strikers

North Delhi Strikers represent the northern part of the capital.

The team has featured fast bowler Harshit Rana, who brings domestic and IPL experience to the squad. The franchise has generally focused on pace bowling and young players from the northern districts of Delhi.

Outer Delhi Warriors

Outer Delhi Warriors were created to represent the outer areas of Delhi.

The franchise has focused on emerging players and has provided opportunities to cricketers who are still developing their professional careers. Siddhant Sharma has been one of the players associated with the team.

Purani Dilli 6

Purani Dilli 6 represents Old Delhi and is one of the most recognisable teams in the competition.

The franchise has been linked with Rishabh Pant, whose association with the team has helped draw attention to the league. Lalit Yadav has also been connected with the side.

South Delhi Superstarz

South Delhi Superstarz represent South Delhi and are known for their aggressive batting approach.

The team attracted attention in 2024 when Priyansh Arya hit six sixes in one over. South Delhi later won the 2026 championship by defeating Central Delhi Kings in the final.

West Delhi Lions

The West Delhi Lions represent West Delhi.

The team won the 2025 DPL title under Nitish Rana. Rana scored an unbeaten 79 in the final and was named both Player of the Match and Player of the Tournament. Ishant Sharma and Hrithik Shokeen were also among the notable names connected with the franchise.

Major Players in the Delhi Premier League

Nitish Rana

Nitish Rana was the leading figure in West Delhi Lions’ title-winning 2025 campaign.

He scored an unbeaten 79 in the final and also contributed with the ball during the tournament. His all-round performances earned him the Player of the Tournament award.

Priyansh Arya

Priyansh Arya became one of the early stars of the DPL after hitting six sixes in one over for South Delhi Superstarz.

The innings helped establish the league as a platform where young Indian batters could produce high-impact performances.

Yash Dhull

Yash Dhull has been one of the important young batters associated with Central Delhi Kings.

The former India Under-19 World Cup-winning captain was named Outstanding Performer of the 2025 DPL season.

Harshit Rana

Harshit Rana has represented North Delhi Strikers and brought experience from domestic cricket and the IPL.

His presence gives the league a connection with the wider Indian T20 system and provides younger players with the chance to compete alongside a professional fast bowler.

Anuj Rawat

Anuj Rawat has been associated with East Delhi Riders.

The wicketkeeper-batter provides experience at the top of the order and was part of the franchise that won the inaugural DPL title.

DPL 2025 Awards

The 2025 season produced several individual award winners.

Role of the Delhi Premier League in Indian Cricket

The DPL was created to strengthen Delhi’s domestic cricket structure.

Delhi has produced several major Indian players, including Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Shikhar Dhawan, Rishabh Pant, Ishant Sharma and many others. The DPL gives the next generation of players a dedicated T20 competition in which they can perform in front of selectors, coaches and franchise scouts.

The tournament also helps players understand the demands of professional T20 cricket. They must manage powerplay overs, build partnerships, bowl at the death and handle pressure during knockout matches.

The league’s franchise model also allows young cricketers to work with experienced players. This can help them improve their tactical understanding and prepare for domestic tournaments such as the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

Delhi Premier League and the IPL

The Delhi Premier League is not directly connected to the IPL, but it can serve as a scouting platform.

Players who perform well in the DPL may attract attention from IPL teams, particularly if they produce strong numbers across several matches. The league also gives established players an opportunity to regain rhythm and remain involved in competitive T20 cricket.

The presence of players such as Nitish Rana, Harshit Rana, Anuj Rawat, Rishabh Pant and Ishant Sharma has helped create a link between the DPL and the larger Indian T20 structure.

Delhi Premier League Venues

Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi has been the main venue for the Delhi Premier League.

The stadium provides a major platform for the competition and allows players to perform in an international-level cricket ground. The 2026 season was played entirely at Arun Jaitley Stadium, including the final.

Using one main venue also helps the league maintain a consistent broadcast setup and gives teams similar playing conditions throughout the tournament.

Delhi Premier League Women’s Competition

The DPL has also developed a women’s competition.

The official league structure lists four women’s franchises:

  • Central Delhi Queens
  • East Delhi Riders
  • North Delhi Strikers
  • South Delhi Superstarz

The women’s tournament is intended to provide Delhi’s women cricketers with a dedicated platform similar to the men’s competition. It also gives emerging players more opportunities to play organised T20 cricket and gain experience in a franchise environment.

Why the Delhi Premier League Matters

The Delhi Premier League gives local cricketers another route into professional cricket.

The tournament provides match experience, exposure to franchise management and opportunities to play alongside established domestic names. It also helps spread interest in cricket across different parts of Delhi by connecting teams with specific zones of the city.

The first three seasons produced three different champions, showing that the competition has not been dominated by one franchise. East Delhi Riders won in 2024, West Delhi Lions won in 2025 and South Delhi Superstarz won in 2026.

As the league continues, its importance will depend on the number of players who use the platform to progress into Delhi’s senior team, the IPL and other professional competitions.
