Portuguese football icon Cristiano Ronaldo, in a 2000-word document released to the media, claims that national team manager Jorge Jesus broke his word to him, leading to the legendary player leaving the team camp.
The Ronaldo-Jesus saga has been one of the biggest news stories in football over the past couple of weeks. To summarise, Portugal played four games of the UEFA Nations League in the recent international break.

In the second of the four games against Norway, it seemed that the 41-year-old was supposed to be brought in at some point in the second half. However, despite extensive warm-ups, Cristiano was never brought into the game. Following the match, he did not greet the fans, and about 48 hours later, he left the national team camp.
Between these two incidents, Jorge Jesus held a press conference following the 2-1 win against Norway. In his answers to the media, the Portuguese national team head coach said that he had never promised Ronaldo any playing time for the match against Norway, among other claims.
With different perspectives of this story making the rounds among fans and in the media over the last two weeks, Cristiano Ronaldo finally broke his silence on the topic and did not spare any details.
In a whopping 2000-word document, CR7 stated that Jesus, at least twice, broke his word in this whole ordeal.
Jorge Jesus was brought in as the Portugal manager following the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The 72-year-old already shared a great rapport with Ronaldo, as he managed Al-Nassr to their first Saudi Pro League title with Cristiano in the 2025-26 season. In fact, the Real Madrid legend played a big role in the hiring of Jorge.
In his statement, Ronaldo claimed that following the World Cup, he had drafted a statement announcing his retirement from international football, but the Portuguese Football Federation president, Pedro Proença, insisted on him staying and even asked about the hiring of the new coach.
After Jesus was brought in, he, according to Ronaldo, claimed that CR7 was vital to his project.
“I received my first call from the new national team coach, who told me he wanted to meet me in person… That day, the coach told me he was counting on me and that my presence was essential to his project. He outlined a plan for my involvement there and then,” Ronaldo wrote.
In the same meeting, Cristiano outlined his immediate plan for the national team. He made it clear that for fitness reasons, he would only play the first and last game for the national team in the upcoming international break.

So, in the first game against Wales, Ronaldo started and played until the 67th minute before being substituted out. According to the agreement between the coach and the player, he would be rested for the upcoming games against Norway and Denmark.
This is when the brunt of the incident takes place. Cristiano claims that before the match against Norway, Jorge Jesus asked him whether he was ready to play for the final 30 minutes of the match.
“On the day of the Norway game, he asked if I was ready to play 30 minutes. It wasn’t in the plan, but I said yes. I warmed up from half-time and was never called upon. He had broken his word,” CR7 wrote in his statement.
Following the game, a peeved Ronaldo did not greet the fans following a 2-1 victory for the national team. This was where many picked up on the animosity between the two parties.
The next day, the Portuguese skipper had a meeting with his national team coach. This meeting was arranged by Al-Nassr Sporting Director Simao Coutinho. And this is where Jesus’ second supposed lie comes in.
In this meeting, Ronaldo presented Jorge with an eight-point statement to be told to the media in the upcoming press conference. The leading goalscorer in men’s international football, in his lengthy document, said,
“The notes I validated were the following: ‘I think it is important, also because it is the truth, to clarify a few things before talking about Denmark:
I myself, and no one else, proposed to Cristiano a plan for him this sporting season with the national team. It was a long and very good conversation.
I know how much he lives and loves the national team and the weight he has in the world, and even more the weight and the positive influence he has had on the national team for 24 consecutive years.
The plan I proposed to Cristiano was accepted.
He never questioned my options. He was exemplary, loyal and professional.
The match in Norway was not part of the plan I drew up for him. However, I felt that he had managed to recover physically from the first match, and I warned him that I might have to use him. Cristiano agreed.
I made a mistake by putting someone of the stature of Pelé or Maradona on to warm up and then not putting him in the game. If it were today, I would not do it.
To close the subject: I want Cristiano in the national team. In fact, I do not want him a little; I want him a lot. Fortunately, he also believes in me. He believed at Al-Nassr, and he does here as well.
About not greeting the fans. We have already spoken about that. Someone who has played more than 230 matches for the national team does not receive lessons from me on love for Portugal. It was a moment of frustration that erases nothing. He is the player who gives the most autographs, takes the most selfies, and shows the most affection to the fans. Let us not invent problems where they do not exist. When we are not happy, we react.”
However, in the subsequent press conference, Jorge Jesus, as they say, did not stick to the script, instead claiming that he alone, as the head coach, has the authority over the personnel and who to play at what point. Which, on most occasions, would be correct.
“The press conference had nothing to do with what we agreed. I heard an aggression I did not deserve. It was the second time he broke his word.”
However, even if we ignore the supposed meeting and promises made between the two before the press conference, a veteran manager like Jorge Jesus must have known that treating a legend with a known ego like Ronaldo would backfire.
Also, Ronaldo is 41 years old; promising that he would be rested for a couple of games, then asking him to put on the boots for his rest game and asking him to train, but then not putting him on the bench is surely the wrong move.
Towards the end of his statement, Cristiano Ronaldo accepted that for his actions, he should be suspended for a few games by the PFA. However, he also claimed that he will not be retiring any time soon and will be fit and available to play for the national team at any point.
“I apologise to teammates for leaving. The responsibility is mine alone. The FPF should punish me with no mitigating circumstances; as captain, that’s an aggravating factor.”
“If I’m fit, after my suspension, I’ll be available, as always, to compete and win for Portugal.”
The Portuguese National Team, despite all the drama, had a successful run of games in the 2026-27 UEFA Nations League. In this particular international break, teams in the A League won four out of their six group games. Portugal first defeated Wales 1-0 before beating Norway in the infamous game. In their third match, the Red Devils defeated Denmark 4-1 before making it four-in-four with another 2-1 triumph against Norway.
With four wins in as many games, Portugal sits on top of their group and has already qualified for the quarter-finals of League A.
