The Caribbean Premier League (CPL) is a professional franchise-based T20 cricket tournament held across the Caribbean. First played in 2013, the league brings together international stars and regional players for a competition known for aggressive batting, exciting finishes and passionate crowds. It is organised by the CPL and features teams representing different Caribbean countries and territories.

The tournament has grown into one of the leading franchise cricket leagues outside the Indian Premier League. It gives West Indies players regular opportunities to compete alongside experienced international cricketers while helping promote cricket across the region. The competition is also known for combining cricket with Caribbean music, entertainment and carnival culture.

The Trinbago Knight Riders are among the most successful teams in CPL history, with five titles. Other past champions include Jamaica Tallawahs, Barbados Tridents, St Kitts & Nevis Patriots, Guyana Amazon Warriors and Saint Lucia Kings. In 2026, the Antigua & Barbuda Falcons won their first championship after defeating the Jamaica Kingsmen by eight wickets in the final.

What Is the Caribbean Premier League?

The CPL is a T20 cricket competition established in 2013. It was created to develop cricket in the Caribbean and provide a major regional tournament featuring local talent and international players.

The league uses a franchise system, with teams representing different Caribbean locations. Players are recruited from around the world, and each side combines West Indies cricketers with overseas professionals. The tournament usually takes place during the Caribbean summer and features matches at several grounds across the region.

The CPL is also known as the Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League because of its title sponsorship. Its matches attract audiences through television, digital platforms and stadium attendance. The competition has helped give emerging West Indies players more experience in the T20 format.

Caribbean Premier League Winners List

The CPL has produced several different champions since its first season in 2013. Trinbago Knight Riders lead the historical title count with five championships, while Jamaica Tallawahs have won three. Barbados Tridents have won twice, and several other franchises have lifted the trophy once.

2013: Jamaica Tallawahs Win the Inaugural Title

Jamaica Tallawahs became the first CPL champions in 2013. They defeated Guyana Amazon Warriors in the final to win the inaugural tournament and establish themselves as an early force in the competition.

The first season introduced the league’s franchise format and brought together players from the Caribbean and other cricketing nations. Jamaica’s victory gave the tournament a strong start and set the stage for future seasons.

2014: Barbados Tridents Claim Their First Title

Barbados Tridents won their first CPL championship in 2014 after defeating Guyana Amazon Warriors in the final. The team produced a strong campaign and became the second franchise to lift the trophy.

The victory also gave Barbados a major achievement in the new competition. The franchise later won the title again in 2019.

2015: Trinbago Knight Riders Begin Their Success

Trinbago Knight Riders won their first championship in 2015, defeating Barbados Tridents in the final. The franchise later became the most successful team in CPL history.

Their title-winning campaign began a period of regular competition among the leading teams. Trinbago would go on to win several more championships in the following years.

2016: Jamaica Tallawahs Win Again

Jamaica Tallawahs secured their second CPL title in 2016 by defeating Guyana Amazon Warriors in the final. The result made them the first team to win the tournament twice.

Their success showed that the franchise could compete for the trophy across different seasons. Jamaica later added another championship in 2022.

2017 and 2018: Back-to-Back Titles for Trinbago

Trinbago Knight Riders won the CPL in 2017 and 2018, becoming the first team to defend the championship successfully. They defeated St Kitts & Nevis Patriots in the 2017 final before beating Guyana Amazon Warriors in 2018.

The two titles strengthened Trinbago’s position among the league’s most successful franchises. Their strong performances also helped build a reputation for consistency in the competition.

2019: Barbados Tridents Return to the Top

Barbados Tridents won their second CPL title in 2019 after defeating Guyana Amazon Warriors in the final. It was their first championship since 2014.

The team produced an effective campaign and added another title to its history. The franchise later became known as the Barbados Royals before returning to the Barbados Tridents name for the 2026 season.

2020: Trinbago Completes an Unbeaten Campaign

Trinbago Knight Riders won the 2020 CPL title after defeating St Lucia Zouks in the final. They completed the tournament without losing a match, making the season one of the franchise’s most memorable campaigns.

The victory was Trinbago’s fourth CPL championship. It also made them the first team to win four titles in the competition.

2021: St Kitts & Nevis Patriots Win Their First Title

St Kitts & Nevis Patriots claimed their maiden CPL championship in 2021. They defeated St Lucia Kings in the final after a successful run through the tournament.

The victory added another name to the list of CPL champions. The Patriots became the fifth different franchise to win the competition.

2022: Jamaica Tallawahs Claim Their Third Championship

Jamaica Tallawahs won their third CPL title in 2022 by defeating Barbados Royals in the final. The result strengthened their place among the competition’s most successful teams.

Their previous championships came in 2013 and 2016. The 2022 victory marked their latest title before the franchise’s later changes within the CPL.

2023: Guyana Amazon Warriors End Their Wait

Guyana Amazon Warriors won their first CPL championship in 2023 after defeating Trinbago Knight Riders in the final. The victory ended a long wait for a franchise that had reached several previous finals without winning the trophy.

Their success was an important moment for Guyanese cricket. The Amazon Warriors had been among the league’s most consistent sides but had repeatedly fallen short in the final.

2024: Saint Lucia Kings Become Champions

Saint Lucia Kings won their first CPL title in 2024, defeating Guyana Amazon Warriors in the final. The victory made them another franchise to join the list of tournament champions.

The result followed several strong campaigns in which the team had come close to winning the competition. Their title gave Saint Lucia a major achievement in regional franchise cricket.

2025: Trinbago Knight Riders Win Again

Trinbago Knight Riders claimed their fifth CPL title in 2025. The victory made them the competition’s most successful franchise, moving them further ahead of their rivals in the overall championship count.

The title also returned the trophy to Trinbago after several seasons in which other teams had won the tournament.

2026: Antigua & Barbuda Falcons Win Their First Title

Antigua & Barbuda Falcons won their first CPL championship in September 2026 after defeating Jamaica Kingsmen by eight wickets in the final at Kensington Oval in Barbados. Jamaica posted 170/9, but the Falcons chased the target comfortably, finishing on 173/2 with 20 balls remaining.

Sufyan Moqim played a major role with the ball, taking four wickets for 14 runs to restrict the Kingsmen. Amir Jangoo and Hasan Nawaz then put together an unbeaten partnership to complete the chase.

The victory gave the Antigua & Barbuda franchise its first CPL title. It also made the Falcons the latest team to join the tournament’s list of champions.

Antigua & Barbuda Falcons

The Antigua & Barbuda Falcons represent Antigua and Barbuda in the CPL. The franchise won its first championship in 2026 after defeating Jamaica Kingsmen in the final.

Their title-winning season was built around strong bowling and effective batting performances. Sufyan Moqim’s four-wicket spell in the final helped set up the successful run chase.

Barbados Tridents

Barbados Tridents represent Barbados and play home matches at Kensington Oval. The franchise won CPL titles in 2014 and 2019, when it competed under the Tridents name.

The team was known as the Barbados Royals for several seasons before reverting to the Barbados Tridents in 2026. The name change returned the franchise to its original identity.

Guyana Amazon Warriors

Guyana Amazon Warriors represent Guyana and have consistently competed near the top of the CPL standings. They reached several finals before winning their first championship in 2023.

The franchise has built a strong connection with local supporters and regularly features leading West Indies players. Their title in 2023 ended a long wait for a championship.

Jamaica Kingsmen

Jamaica Kingsmen represent Jamaica and joined the CPL in the expanded 2026 competition. They reached the final in their first season but lost to Antigua & Barbuda Falcons.

The team made an immediate impact by advancing through the playoffs. Their run to the final gave the new franchise an impressive start, despite missing out on the trophy.

Saint Lucia Kings

Saint Lucia Kings represent Saint Lucia and won their first CPL championship in 2024. The franchise had previously competed under the St Lucia Zouks name.

Their title-winning campaign added Saint Lucia to the list of CPL champions. The team has continued to bring together Caribbean players and international professionals.

St Kitts & Nevis Patriots

St Kitts & Nevis Patriots represent St Kitts and Nevis. They won their first CPL title in 2021 after defeating Saint Lucia in the final.

The franchise has featured several notable T20 players and has remained part of the competition since its early years. Its 2021 championship remains a major achievement in team history.

Trinbago Knight Riders

Trinbago Knight Riders represent Trinidad and Tobago and are the most successful franchise in CPL history. They have won five championships, in 2015, 2017, 2018, 2020 and 2025.

The team is part of the Knight Riders franchise group, which also operates teams in other T20 competitions. Their repeated title wins have made them one of the league’s leading sides.

Caribbean Premier League Format

The CPL follows the standard T20 format, with each team allowed to bat for a maximum of 20 overs in an innings. Teams compete in a league stage before the leading sides advance to the playoffs.

The tournament expanded to seven teams in 2026 and featured 39 matches. The competition’s playoff stage included the Eliminator, Qualifier 1, Qualifier 2 and the final.

  • League stage: Teams compete to collect points and qualify for the playoffs.
  • Qualifier 1: The top two teams face each other, with the winner advancing directly to the final.
  • Eliminator: The third- and fourth-placed teams play for a place in Qualifier 2.
  • Qualifier 2: The Eliminator winner faces the loser of Qualifier 1.
  • Final: The winners of Qualifier 1 and Qualifier 2 compete for the championship.

This system gives the top two teams an extra opportunity to reach the final. Teams that finish third and fourth must win consecutive knockout matches to claim the trophy.

Caribbean Premier League 2026 Season

The 2026 CPL season ran from August 7 to September 20 and featured seven franchises. The tournament included the Jamaica Kingsmen, while Barbados returned to the Tridents’ name. The four playoff matches were held at Kensington Oval in Barbados.

The Antigua & Barbuda Falcons emerged as champions after defeating the Jamaica Kingsmen in the final. The Falcons restricted Jamaica to 170/9 before completing an eight-wicket win with 20 balls remaining. Their performance gave the franchise its first CPL championship.

The season also featured major individual performances. Maaz Sadaqat scored a century in the final for Jamaica Kingsmen, while Quinton de Kock finished as the leading run-scorer of the tournament. Sufyan Moqim’s four-wicket spell proved decisive in the final.
