These two contrasting forms of luck have birthed something very rare. Due to these differing circumstances for a team and a player in it, Babar Azam has become the first Asian batter to have scored three 50s in a losing cause in a T20 series.
The Pakistan men’s cricket team has been having a disaster of a time since the 2023 Cricket World Cup in India. After a disappointing group stage exit from the tournament, the team’s coach and director were replaced, and so was captain Babar Azam as Pakistan now had different captains in different formats.
They then lost the three-match Test series against Australia 3-0 under Shan Masood’s captaincy. They have now lost the T20I series against New Zealand with two matches to spare. That too in a year that will be the site for a T20 World Cup.

Pakistan took on New Zealand in the 3rd T20I of their five-match series on January 16th in Dunedin’s University Oval. Like the last two matches, the hosts won the toss and decided to bat first.
The match was then all New Zealand. The Blackcaps scored a whopping 224/7, with opener Finn Allen going on a tear with his 62-ball-137. Pakistan did not stand a chance but they sure tried, especially Babar Azam, whose personal score of 58 off 37 balls was the highest for anyone from the Pakistani pavilion.
With the bowling failing Pakistan in every match of the series, Babar Azam is his team’s only consistent batter and player in this series against New Zealand. In the three matches he has played, he has crossed the 50-run mark in all three matches. In fact, he is the only player across both teams to have done so.
Azam has scored 181 runs in three matches with a strike rate of 157. He will now be looking to win some pride for his country and team by winning the remaining two T20Is.
