Hanuma Vihari, a member of the U19 World Cup-winning Indian team in 2012, has been known for his solid batting skills since childhood. Hailing from Kakinada in Andhra Pradesh, he quickly rose through the ranks, representing South Zone and the junior National teams.
While he continued to score runs in various formats, it was evident that Hanuma Vihari was best suited for Test cricket. In 2012, he secured an IPL contract with Sunrisers Hyderabad and even won the Man-of-the-Match award that season, displaying his part-time off-breaks by dismissing Chris Gayle for a golden duck. Although his batting style lacked the unconventional flair and power-hitting typically seen in T20 cricket, his talent and class were undeniable.
During his time with Sunrisers Hyderabad, Hanuma Vihari received high praise from his teammate, South African cricket legend Dale Steyn, who recognized Vihari’s impressive batting skills. Hanuma Vihari continued to improve his game in First-class cricket, maintaining an average in the 60s and eventually earning a call-up to the national team.
He made his debut mid-series during India’s tour of England in 2018, where he showcased his composure and solid batting with a gritty fifty, despite some lucky breaks. However, with competition for middle-order spots and the team’s preference for playing five bowlers, Hanuma Vihari’s position was not secure. He was even asked to open the batting in Australia due to team combination, where he may not have scored many runs but showed great determination in facing the new ball. After Rohit Sharma’s injury, Hanuma Vihari returned to the middle order.
Hanuma Vihari’s ability to bowl fairly decent part-time off-breaks is another advantage that works in his favor when the team management decides on the playing XI. Although Kohli usually prefers to play five specialist bowlers, he has recently opted for an extra batsman and only four bowlers, making Hanuma Vihari’s bowling skills invaluable.
However, it’s his batting that has truly impressed, and after a highly successful tour of the West Indies, he seems to have secured his spot in the middle-order. In fact, this has resulted in Rohit Sharma being tasked with opening the innings to fit into the XI, a complete reversal of fortunes from the MCG Test in early 2019. Although Vihari is now part of the Delhi Capitals in the IPL, he is still considered a Test match specialist who could potentially be a resource for ODI cricket.
