The New Zealand Cricket (NZC) has announced two separate squads for the first three and the last two matches of the five-match IND vs NZ ODI series.
The India tour of New Zealand 2026 will get underway on October 22 with a five-T20I series, and the ODI series will begin on November 4. Then, the two-match Test series, which is part of the ongoing ICC WTC cycle, is scheduled to kick off on November 19.
There was an India vs New Zealand ODI series in January in India, which the Kiwis won by 2-1. Daryl Mitchell, who was the Man of the Series earlier this year, will once again pose a great threat to Shubman Gill’s side, though Mitchell won’t feature in the last two ODIs of the upcoming rubber.
IND vs NZ: Why has New Zealand announced two ODI squads?
New Zealand have named separate squads for the first three ODIs and the next two ODIs against India because seven players will go to Wellington to prepare for the 1st Test, considering the gap between the 5th ODI and the beginning of the Test series is only three days.
4 players return to the New Zealand ODI squad, while 3 are injured for the Kiwis
The Kiwis have made a wholesale of changes to their ODI setup for the series against India.
Opener Finn Allen, fast bowler Lockie Ferguson, wicket-keeper batsman Tim Seifert, and all-rounder Rachin Ravindra have returned to the ODI squad. But three important fast bowlers – Ben Sears, Zakary Foulkes, and Will O’Rourke – will miss the India vs New Zealand ODI series owing to injuries.
Allen and Ferguson last featured in ODI cricket three years ago, while Rachin will miss the T20I series due to a shoulder injury but is expected to be fit for the ODIs.
Head coach Rob Walter said, “First and foremost, this is a huge series for us, playing in front of our fans in full stadiums against a formidable Indian side. With the ODI World Cup just one year away, it’s important for us to also view these matches as valuable preparation for that event.”
“Bringing in seven players for the final ODIs allows us to test our depth and see how those players fare against a world-class side. Obviously every Test match is important for us in terms of championship points, which is why we’re extracting some of that squad early for additional preparation before the first Test against India at the Basin Reserve on November 19.”
