Updated WTC Table: Pakistan have been hit with an 11-point penalty in the World Test Championship. The ICC announced on Monday that Pakistan were 11 overs short of the required rate in the third Test against England at Edgbaston.

Under WTC rules, a team loses one point for every over it fails to bowl within the allotted time. Players are also fined five per cent of their match fee for each over, up to a maximum of 50 per cent. So Pakistan lost 11 points, and every player was fined half their match fee.

Pakistan have won only two of nine Tests in this cycle and lost seven. After the latest penalty, their points total is just five. They were also docked eight points earlier this year for a slow over-rate against Bangladesh in Dhaka. That brings their total deductions to 19 points in this WTC cycle.

Pakistan is now at the bottom of the table with a points percentage of 4.63. They have also fallen to ninth in the ICC men’s Test team rankings. A decade ago, in 2016, they were the top-ranked Test side in the world.

Impact on the 2025–27 WTC Table after the England Win

The updated WTC table shows Australia at first. They have played 10 Tests, won eight, lost two, and have 96 points. Their points percentage is 80. South Africa are second. They have played four Tests, won three, lost one, and have 36 points. Their points percentage is 75. New Zealand are third. They have played six, won four, lost one, drawn one, and have 52 points. Their points percentage is 72.22. Bangladesh are fourth. They have played six, won three, lost two, drawn one, and have 40 points. Their points percentage is 55.56.

India are fifth. They have played 11 Tests, won five, lost four, drawn two, and have 68 points. Their points percentage is 51.52. England are sixth. They have played 16 Tests, won seven, lost eight, drawn one. They have had 14 points deducted and have 74 points. Their points percentage is 38.54. Sri Lanka are seventh. They have played six, won one, lost two, drawn three, and have 24 points. Their points percentage is 33.33.

How Can India Qualify for the WTC Final 2027?

India’s chances of reaching the World Test Championship final in 2027 are still alive, but they are getting smaller. Recent results have made the picture clearer, and India now have very little room for error. They are currently fifth in the points table, with 68 points from 11 Tests and a points percentage of 51.52.

India’s run in this WTC cycle has been mixed. They drew 2-2 in England, which was a strong result. They then beat the West Indies 2-0 at home. But the home series against South Africa was a big setback, as India lost 0-2. More recently, they beat Sri Lanka 1-0 away, but they missed the chance to complete a whitewash. That failure to win the second Test kept them stuck in fifth place.

India still have seven Tests left. They will tour New Zealand for two Tests in October 2026. After that, they will host Australia for a five-match series in December 2026. To have a realistic shot at the final, India likely need to win at least six of those seven matches. Their current qualification chance is only around 3 per cent, down by 3 per cent from before.

The WTC final will be played at The Oval in London from June 9 to 13, 2027. The top two teams in the points percentage table will qualify. The table uses points percentage, not total points, so every Test carries equal weight. India must win almost every remaining Test, especially the away games in New Zealand and the home series against Australia.
