The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) President, Mohsin Naqvi, could spark a potential controversy in the Women’s Asia Cup final tonight in the trophy presentation fiasco, as he did last year when the India men’s team won the continental tournament.
The Women’s Asia Cup final, IND W vs SL W, is set to be played on Sunday in Dubai between India and Sri Lanka. Both teams have had unbeaten campaigns hitherto, but that streak is going to end for one team tonight.
Harmanpreet Kaur’s Indian women’s cricket team is the favorite tonight against Sri Lanka, though Chamari Athapaththu’s contingent will take huge confidence from the fact that they had beaten India in the Asia Cup final two years ago in Dambulla.
Apart from the cricketing action, one aspect that many have their focus on is Naqvi and the trophy presentation moment if India wins the final.
Last year, after Suryakumar Yadav’s men’s team beat Pakistan in the final in Dubai, Naqvi, who is the ACC President, remained adamant that only he would hold out the trophy to Suryakumar. However, India’s stance was clear: they would not be accepting the trophy from Naqvi, who is the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman and also the Federal Minister for Interior of Pakistan; Naqvi is an integral member of the Pakistani government.
India had refused to accept the trophy from Naqvi, who then decided to take the trophy away. The Indian players celebrated without the Asia Cup trophy, which is still in the ACC’s offices.

As per RevSportz journalist Rohit Juglan, the ACC Vice President Khalid Zarooni, who is a member of the Emirates Cricket Board, will likely hand out the trophy to the winning captain or team in the Women’s Asia Cup final. The reporter adds in his tweet that Naqvi is unlikely to be in attendance for the final tonight in Dubai.
Juglan tweeted, “Most likely Vice president ACC Mr. Khalid Zarooni will be there for Asia cup trohy giving ceremony – Mohsin Naqvi not in Dubai as of now (most likely he won’t be there)”
Naqvi, meanwhile, was recently involved in the wholesale changes of the Pakistan cricket team on their England tour. The PCB dropped 7 players, along with the head coach Sarfaraz Ahmed and bowling coach Umar Gul, from the Pakistan squad after the team went 2-0 down to England. Pakistan did produce a better fight in the third Test, though they couldn’t match the home team’s strength, skills, and experience and were whitewashed 3-0.
