What Triggered the Catastrophic Flash Floods in Nepal?
A catastrophic flash flood struck Nepal, which was caused by a glacial collapse near the border with China. The collapse triggered a massive flow of mud, water, and debris. The Trishuli River, also known as the Bhotekoshi, burst its banks. Experts said water levels on the river rose by as much as nine metres within half an hour.
Initial reports suggested the floods may have been caused by an earthquake that triggered a landslide. However, the US Geological Survey later confirmed that a glacial collapse was responsible.
