England all-rounder Sam Curran has been ruled out for the rest of the summer due to a groin injury. He will undergo surgery on Friday, August 21.
The setback stalls his bid for a Test comeback. He last played a Test in 2021. He was being considered as an option in the Joe Root-led team. Selector Marcus North said Curran provides a certain balance to the team. However, he also noted that Curran has been carrying niggles due to his high workload. He was not chosen for the first two Pakistan Tests.
Sam Curran Injury: When Will He Return?
North said it would be unfair to put him in the first two Tests. He said the medical team would work with him in the coming weeks to make him an option for the third Test.
Curran last featured in The Hundred, where he led MI London. He also featured in the home ODI series against India. He missed IPL 2026 due to a groin injury. In March, he called it an injury he has been battling with and admitted it had gradually got worse.
Rajasthan Royals director of cricket Kumar Sangakkara had questioned Curran’s absence from the IPL. He said it was disappointing to see him playing matches for Surrey despite the injury.
Will Jacks was also missing from Surrey’s squad. He is recovering from an operation to remove his appendix. His recovery will be monitored ahead of the Sri Lanka series in September.
Surrey are currently seventh in Division One. They have called up Mahipal Lomror to fill the gap left by Jacks and Dan Lawrence.
How Sam Curran Became a Star at Surrey
Sam Curran has had a standout career with Surrey County Cricket Club. He rose through the youth system to become a core member of the senior side and a key leader.
Curran has represented Surrey since the U15 level and captained the U17 side. He made his first-class debut for Surrey in April 2015 at just 16 years old. In March 2025, he was officially appointed captain of Surrey’s T20 Blast side. He had previously captained the team on an interim basis in 2023.
He was a key member of Surrey’s 2023 County Championship-winning side. He has also been a vital part of the Oval Invincibles squad. They won three consecutive The Hundred titles in 2023, 2024, and 2025.
Across all T20 cricket, Curran has amassed over 4,000 runs and taken over 250 wickets. In 79 T20 Blast matches for Surrey, he has scored 1,514 runs at a strike rate of 136.27, along with 73 wickets at an economy rate of 8.36. He scored his maiden T20 century in the 2024 Vitality Blast against Hampshire. In a T20 Blast match against Middlesex in May 2026, he played a captain’s knock of 71 off 47 balls to guide Surrey to victory.
He was named one of the Wisden Cricketers of the Year in 2019. In 2023, he was awarded an MBE for his services to cricket following England’s T20 World Cup win in 2022.
Curran underwent surgery for a groin injury in the second half of the 2026 season and was ruled out of the remainder of Surrey’s campaign. He had been hoping to use the County Championship matches to push for an England Test recall, but the injury ended that plan for the season.
