Birthday Wish For MS Dhoni: Former India captains and teammates Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni share a great bond, having played together in the national side for a dozen years.
Dhoni, in fact, is credited significantly for shepherding Rohit’s career, most famously promoting him to open the innings in the ICC Champions Trophy 2013 and turning around his fortunes forever.
The Ranchi-born has always received immense respect from Rohit, who, in his own funny ways, has lavished praise on the legendary keeper-finisher.
One of Rohit’s funniest moments in the press conference went viral on Tuesday, July 7, in which Rohit was asked to speak on Dhoni’s birthday during the 2019 World Cup.
Dhoni was part of the Indian squad in the 2019 World Cup that took place in England. India endured heartbreak in the semi-final against New Zealand in Manchester on July 9.
A couple of days before that, the team celebrated Dhoni’s birthday on July 7 at Headingley in Leeds, where they won their last group stage game against Sri Lanka on July 6.
Rohit was the Man of the Match in that fixture against the Lankans: his serene century, 103 runs off 94 balls, helped India jog to the target of 25 runs with over six overs to spare.
In the post-match press conference attended by Rohit, the India opener was reminded of Dhoni’s impending B-Day and his thoughts on how the team would enjoy Mahi’s special day.
Rohit, in his typically witty and tad aloof style, responded with, “Kya bolu yaar birthday main kya bola jaata hai? Happy Birthday!” Rohit’s words were received with a huge round of laughter from the reporters in the room.
“Yahi toh bola jaata hai!” Rohit replied with a huge smile. Rohit added that Dhoni will cut a cake in the presence of the team, and photos of the event will be revealed duly.
The video of this funny bit from Rohit’s press conference in 2019 went viral on social media on Tuesday as Dhoni turned 45 years old. Check it out here.

Meanwhile, Indian cricket fans, and in particular Chennai Super Kings (CSK) followers, are keenly waiting on an update regarding Dhoni’s future in the IPL.
Dhoni didn’t play a single match in IPL 2026 for CSK as he dealt with a calf injury. The date for the franchises to reveal their retained and released players’ lists will be around mid-November, though a confirmation on Dhoni’s potential future in the competition is expected to be revealed much before that.
CSK’s bowling coach Eric Simons had said that Dhoni was smashing the ball very well in the nets. Simons reckons only Dhoni will decide his future based on how he feels fitness-wise.
The CSK bowling coach had said towards the end of the season, “Honestly, he has hit the ball so well. He obviously had a leg injury, which made it very difficult for him to run, so that’s why he couldn’t play. But in terms of hitting the ball in the netw, he’s hitting it as well as I’ve ever seen him hit it.
“But I keep saying this: MS will know and MS will make a decision about when he’s ready and when he’s right. And I tell you what, if he knows he’s not, he won’t play. But if he is right, he will make the decision in the best interest of the team and not for himself as an individual.
“But it would be great to have him playing. It’s been great just having around the unit and being somewhat a tap into for knowledge and calmness.”
