Zion Suzuki is a Japanese goalkeeper who plays for Parma. He was born in the United States but represents Japan internationally. He was named after Mount Zion, a biblical location in Jerusalem. His family moved to Japan when he was young and settled in Urawa, Saitama, where he grew up.

Suzuki made his AFC Champions League debut on April 15, 2022. He played the match against Singapore’s Lion City Sailors. He kept a clean sheet in a 5-0 win in the next match against China’s Shandong Taishan. He played in four group stage matches before being dropped in favor of first-choice goalkeeper Shusaku Nishikawa for the knockout stages. He still ended up winning the 2022 AFC Champions League trophy and the 2022 Japanese Super Cup with his club.

At the international level, Suzuki played in Japan’s opening match of the 2023 Asian Cup, a 4-2 win over Vietnam. He also played in their 2-1 loss to Iraq, logging one save. On May 15, 2026, he was selected in Japan’s 26-man squad for the 2026 World Cup.

Top 10 Things You Didn’t Know About Zion Suzuki

Born in the USA but Chose Japan

Zion Suzuki was born on August 21, 2002, in Newark, New Jersey. With a Ghanaian-American father and a Japanese mother, he was eligible to represent the US, Ghana, or Japan. He moved to Japan at age 6 and chose to represent the country where he was raised. A multicultural goalkeeper with a clear identity.

His Name ‘Zion’ Comes from Jerusalem

His unique first name isn’t random. It was reportedly inspired by Mount Zion in Jerusalem. This gives his name a biblical meaning. A name that carries spiritual weight and a sense of purpose. Not just a footballer with a cool name, but a man whose identity is rooted in something bigger.

Constantly Mistaken for Rui Hachimura

Being a tall, mixed-race athlete, Suzuki is frequently stopped in airports and public places by fans who mistake him for Japanese NBA star Rui Hachimura. He once joked that at least Hachimura is a good 4 inches taller than him. A case of mistaken identity that follows him everywhere.

Turned Down Manchester United

In the summer of 2023, Manchester United showed serious interest in signing him. However, at just 20 years old, Suzuki rejected the move because he wanted guaranteed playing time to continue his development rather than sit on the bench. A brave decision that prioritised his career over a big name.

One of Urawa Reds’ Youngest-Ever Signings

His talent was evident early. At just 16 years and 5 months old, he signed his first professional contract with Urawa Red Diamonds, making him one of the youngest players to ever turn pro for the club. A teenage prodigy who was trusted by one of Japan’s biggest clubs.

Nearly Missed the 2026 World Cup with a Broken Hand

In November 2025, Suzuki suffered a broken hand, a devastating injury for a goalkeeper. It put his 2026 World Cup participation in serious doubt. However, he fought back and successfully recovered just in time to make the squad.

Nicknamed the ‘Japanese André Onana’

Due to his similar physical build, African heritage, and modern, ball-playing style as a goalkeeper, fans and media have drawn comparisons to Cameroonian star André Onana, giving him the nickname “the Japanese Onana.” A compliment to his style and a reflection of his unique footballing identity.

Elite Physical Stats

Standing at 1.90 metres (6’3″) and weighing between 91–101 kg (200–223 lbs), Suzuki possesses an imposing frame. His athleticism come from his African-American paternal lineage. He is a physical presence that commands the penalty area with authority.

Career Path: From Japan to Serie A

He came up through Urawa Reds’ youth system. Then moved to Belgian side Sint-Truiden in 2023 to step into Europe. And then secured a transfer to Italian Serie A club Parma in 2024. He had a steady rise through the ranks. He was always moving forward.

Embraces a Triple Cultural Background

Suzuki proudly identifies with three cultures. His father’s Ghanaian-American roots and his mother’s Japanese heritage. He has often said he feels lucky to have been exposed to such diverse traditions, food, and perspectives from a young age. A global citizen between the posts.
