Jasprit Bumrah plays for the India national cricket team. He also represents Mumbai Indians in the IPL, while playing domestic cricket for Gujarat. He made his international debut in 2016 in Australia and quickly became known for his pace, accuracy, and unusual bowling action that makes him hard to read. In T20Is that same year, he finished as India’s top wicket-taker.

In Test cricket, he debuted in 2018 and soon became a key strike bowler. He has also led India as captain in some matches when regular captains were unavailable. His biggest strength is consistency in all formats. He has been ranked No.1 bowler in ICC rankings across formats. He has also received many awards like ICC Team of the Year selections.

Bumrah was born on 6 December 1993 in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. He comes from a Punjabi Ramgarhia Sikh family. His father passed away when Bumrah was just 5 years old due to illness. He studied at Nirman High School in Vastrapur, where his mother worked. This is also where he played cricket at school level.

Top 10 Things You Didn’t Know About Jasprit Bumrah

Perfected His Yorker by Bowling at a Wall

As a kid in Ahmedabad, Bumrah would bowl for hours in his apartment hallway while his mother napped. He aimed at a single tile or a footmark on the far wall, focusing only on accuracy. That boring, repetitive practice – no pace, just hitting a spot – unknowingly trained him to bowl those deadly yorkers that now terrorise batters worldwide.

His Slingy Action Was Completely Self-Taught

Bumrah’s bowling action breaks every textbook rule – the hyper-extended elbow, short run-up, weird release point. The secret? No coach taught it. Growing up in cramped neighbourhood spaces with no room for a long run-up, he just developed whatever worked. He never tried to change it, and that unorthodox action became his greatest weapon.

IIT-Kanpur Studied His ‘Reverse Magnus Effect’

Researchers at IIT-Kanpur discovered something wild about Bumrah’s bowling. Due to his unique release and seam angle, his deliveries experience a ‘reverse Magnus effect’ – the ball dips much sharper and later than normal. That’s why batsmen constantly misjudge his length. It’s not just a trick of the eye; it’s actual physics working in his favour.

The Secret Off-Spin Ball at 145 km/h

Batters prepare for Bumrah’s yorker and bouncer. But his most deceptive delivery is the off-cutter – except it behaves exactly like an off-spinner’s stock ball, spinning away from right-handers, but at 140-145 km/h. It squares batsmen up or takes the outside edge. This secret weapon is a major reason he’s so effective across all three formats.

His Biggest Dream Was Never to Play for India

Shockingly, cricket was never Bumrah’s primary ambition. His father died young, and his mother raised him alone. For most of his teenage years, his goal was simple: get an education, find a stable job, and move his family to Canada. He played cricket just “for fun” in the gullies. A late, unplanned pivot changed everything.

A Connoisseur of Rare Perfumes

When he’s not taking wickets, Bumrah indulges in a surprisingly refined hobby – collecting rare perfumes. He can talk for hours about oil concentration, top notes, base notes, and longevity. He doesn’t just buy popular brands; he researches niche fragrances and their stories. A fascinating contrast to his aggressive, straightforward style of fast bowling.

The Emotional Apology to AB de Villiers

In IPL 2015, a young Bumrah dismissed AB de Villiers for the first time. Overcome with emotion, he gave the legend an aggressive send-off. He regretted it instantly. The next day, Bumrah posted a heartfelt public apology to de Villiers, showing rare maturity for a young fast bowler. Class is not just in bowling but in admitting mistakes.

His Favourite Comfort Food Is Dhokla

Despite access to five-star restaurants worldwide, Bumrah stays connected to his Gujarati roots through food. His absolute favourite comfort food is humble dhokla – a soft, steamed savoury cake. Teammates joke he could eat it for breakfast, lunch, and dinner without complaint. A simple, unpretentious choice that reminds him of home.

Held an Unwanted 17-Year-Old IPL Record

The 2026 season was rough for Bumrah early on. He bowled 146 dot balls without taking a wicket – the longest wicketless streak by a frontline bowler in a single IPL season, breaking a 17-year-old record. An unwanted milestone, but it showed his champion mentality: he kept his length tight and bounced back in the latter half.

The Weight of the ‘289 Men’ Before Him

On January 5, 2018, at Newlands, Bumrah received his Test cap from Kapil Dev. He became India’s 290th Test cricketer. That number is a powerful reminder that despite his massive achievements, he is part of a long lineage – 289 men had worn that jersey before him. A moment of deep humility and pride.
