IND vs ZIM: It seems that all the work and heft the Indian cricket team had gained during the two-year cycle between the 2024 and 2026 ICC T20 World Cups could go to the bin as they are now pushed into virtually a must-win position.
Never in the past two decades have India faced Zimbabwe in a contest of such high stakes. India cannot afford another defeat in the Super 8 round, for that would mean an exit before the semi-finals of a home ICC event.
This is because of two results: India’s own loss against South Africa by 76 runs in Ahmedabad that followed West Indies’ mauling of Zimbabwe by a huge margin of 107 runs.
This has made the difference between India’s and West Indies’ net run rate almost too much to cover up for India even if they both finish with four points at the end of their matches in the Super 8.
Thus, India require South Africa to beat West Indies when the two sides meet on Thursday afternoon in Ahmedabad, and India will host Zimbabwe later in the evening in Chennai, where they must hammer Sikandar Raza’s team.
Against the Proteas, India faltered terribly in their batting department and failed to seize the momentum when they bowled.
IND vs ZIM: Two changes India must make to their Playing XI against Zimbabwe
Axar Patel In, Washington Sundar Out
To the shock of everyone, India continued with Washington Sundar in their XI and consigned Axar Patel to the bench, who was rested in India’s last group game against the Netherlands. A tactic that proved to be disastrous.
Sundar failed to make an impact in either department: 0/17 in 2 overs with the ball and 11 (11) with the bat.
Axar is the team’s vice-captain. He’s been a proper match-winner in white-ball cricket, especially in India’s unbeaten campaigns at the T20 World Cup 2024 and ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
Regardless of the number of left-handers in Zimbabwe’s lineup, Axar should walk back into the Indian XI.
Sanju Samson In, Rinku Singh Out
An emergency in Rinku Singh’s family meant that the left-hander left the squad to be with his family. It’s not clear when Rinku would rejoin the squad.
Even if he’s available for the IND vs ZIM match, India should play Sanju Samson for tactical reasons. India need a right-hander to break the slew of left-handers in their batting order.
In this tournament, oppositions have targeted India’s left-handed openers, Abhishek and Kishan, with off-spinners and attained success.
Samson got one opportunity in this competition, against Namibia, and showed what he brings to the table as an opener by blasting 22 runs off only eight balls.
Rinku, on the other hand, hasn’t lived up to his finisher’s role yet, managing scores of 6, 1, 11*, 6*, and 0.
Bringing in Samson in place of Rinku and shifting Kishan back to No. 3 would offer India more dynamicism at the top, given that Tilak Varma and Suryakumar Yadav have not been able to start as rapidly as they would have liked.
Further, since the match is in Chennai, where the surface is known to assist spinners, India could also stick with Sundar and drop Arshdeep.
