In one of the most bizarre, unforeseen, and unfortunate reasons for a top-level cricket match to get abandoned, Friday’s Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) match between the Adelaide Strikers Women and Hobart Hurricanes Women at the Karen Rolton Oval in Adelaide was called off after one innings because of a hole in the pitch!
While the men’s international cricket is going in full flow, the Australian women cricketers and several marquee international women players are involved in the WBBL in Australia.
Two games were scheduled on Friday, December 5. One of them ended without a result, and not because of rain or any other weather interruptions, but because of a freakish incident.
WBBL: Heavy roller rolls onto a cricket ball in mid-innings break; creates irreparable hole
The WBBL match on Friday between Adelaide and Hobart at the Karen Rolton Oval had to be abandoned at its halfway mark because of an irreparable hole that was created after a cricket ball inadvertently rolled under the heavy roller that was being rolled on the pitch as per the rules.
After the completion of an innings, a light or heavy roller gets rolled over the pitch to settle it down a bit. When the same was happening during the innings break of this match, a ball came under the roller inadvertently from the nearby players doing fielding practice.
The ball got rolled and pressed into the pitch and created a ball-shaped hole in the middle of the strip. The groundstaff tried to even out the surface, but their attempts were futile. Eventually, the umpires decided to call the match off.
A statement from the WBBL said, “During the innings break at KRO, a ball was inadvertently rolled onto the pitch while the roller was being used. The ball went beneath the roller creating a hole in the pitch.
“As a result, pitch conditions were changed significantly. After consultation, it was considered unreasonable to expect Hobart to bat in conditions that were materially different to those the Strikers had. Both captains were consulted and accepted the decision.”
The Hobart Hurricanes had won the toss and elected to bat first. They posted 167/4 on the back of opener Madeline Penna’s 63 and a powerful finish from Bridget Patterson, who thumped 24 off 12 balls.
Tahila McGrath’s Hobart is the first and only team to have qualified for the knockouts of the WBBL 2025. Further, they have already sealed their spot in the final, having secured the top spot in the points table with 7 wins in 10 games.
The Hobart Hurricanes will host the WBBL final on December 13 at the Bellerive Oval, Hobart.
