The Indian cricket team is the overwhelming favorite for the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, which is only a couple of months away.
No men’s team has successfully defended its T20 World Cup crown and gone back-to-back at the ICC’s showpiece men’s T20 event. India are one of the three teams to have won two men’s ICC T20 World Cups.
Under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy, with head coach Rahul Dravid, India won the previous edition in 2024 in the USA and West Indies, beating South Africa in a thrilling final in Barbados.
Since then, the makeup of the Indian T20I team has changed significantly. The places of the retired trio of Rohit, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja have been filled satisfactorily, and the team has been almost indomitable under captain Suryakumar Yadav and coach Gautam Gambhir.
Under the Suryakumar-Gambhir pairing, India have not lost a single T20I series. In fact, the Indian T20I team has been unbeaten in T20I series since August 2023, which consists of a run of 15 series/tournaments, including winning the T20 World Cup 2024 and the Asia Cup 2025.
While Gambhir and Suryakumar have been doing plenty of shuffling in the batting order in recent months, and also the bowling combination isn’t set in stone yet, the personnel they have used have remained largely consistent.
Most players (barring Sanju Samson) must be feeling secure about their places in the playing XI and also in the squad.
While there is a huge concern over the form of captain Suryakumar and vice-captain Gill, they are unlikely to be dropped this close to the tournament. India will play a five-match T20I series against New Zealand at home, which would provide the two right-handers more opportunities to get back to form.
The majority of India’s squad for the T20 World Cup 2026 is predictable. The likes of Abhishek Sharma, Gill, Suryakumar, and Tilak form the top four, with Samson being the backup opener and keeper.
Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, and Axar Patel are the three key all-rounders in the side that give both batting and bowling depths.
With Gill opening, Jitesh Sharma is the better choice for the finisher-keeper role than Samson.
The bowling attack will be spearheaded by Jasprit Bumrah, with Varun Chakaravarthy, the No. 1 T20I bowler right now, as the lead spinner.
The inclusion of Kuldeep Yadav and Arshdeep Singh in the playing XI will probably depend on the conditions India play their matches in, but both are guaranteed to be part of the 15-man squad.
This leaves two spots, which are likely to go to Harshit Rana, who has produced impressive performances in the past month in Australia and against South Africa at home, and Washington Sundar, who is a proper all-rounder in Asian conditions and could even play as a third or fourth spin option in Colombo, where India will face Pakistan.
India have given this set of players ample opportunities over the past year and a half and are not expected to veer away from them. Gambhir will also have solid reserve choices outside the 15-man squad, the likes of Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shahbaz Ahmed, Rinku Singh, and Prasidh Krishna.

When will India’s squad for ICC T20 World Cup be announced?
India’s squad for the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 will be announced on December 20, Saturday, in a press conference at 1.30 PM IST. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar will address the press conference and name the squad. To note is that changes to the squad can be made until the start of the tournament in February.
When will the T20 World Cup 2026 start?
The T20 World Cup 2026 is scheduled to run from February 7 to March 8. India will kick off their campaign on February 7 against the USA in Mumbai. The India vs Pakistan match is slated for February 15 in Colombo.\
