Shreyas Iyer’s recovery from a spleen injury sustained during India’s third ODI against Australia in Sydney continues steadily, with the 30-year-old understood to be out of intensive care and responding well after undergoing minor surgery.
According to Cricbuzz, the procedure performed in Sydney last week, was necessary after Iyer suffered a ruptured spleen while diving forward to take a catch during Saturday’s match at the SCG. The operation was described as minor, though it has required a short period of rest and observation.
Shreyas Iyer’s Family Member to Fly to Sydney
The BCCI, working in concert with team medical staff led by Dr Rizwan Khan, remains in regular contact with Iyer. Arrangements are also being made for a family member to travel from Mumbai to Sydney.
Team sources report that Iyer has resumed light daily activities, taking calls and eating meals prepared by friends. He is expected to remain under supervision for several more days before any decision is made about travel or rehabilitation.
India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav offered a reassuring update from Canberra.
“He’s stable. We’ve spoken the last two days, and he’s talking normally. Everything looks fine. He just needs a few more days to recover,” he said.
For now, Iyer’s return to cricket will depend entirely on medical clearance. The selectors are unlikely to hurry him, with the next ODI assignment, a three-match series against South Africa, still a month away.
