England Got 2-Point Penalty for Slow Over Rate: England took a 2-1 lead in the five-match Test series against India in the ongoing Anderson-Tendulkar trophy following their memorable victory in the Lords Test by only 22 runs.
The match went down to the wire, with the game ending in the last session of day 5 at Lord’s as Ravindra Jadeja, Jasprit Bumrah, and Mohammed Siraj performed a staggering act of rearguard against the England bowlers, trying to turtle their way to the target of 193 runs.
India’s last two partnerships in the chase were 35 (132) and 23 (80) between Jadeja and Bumrah, and Jadeja and Siraj. However, eventually, the two tailenders were dismissed, with Jadeja left stranded at 61* in a heroic, under-pressure innings.
England Got 2-Point Penalty for Slow Over Rate
Despite the victory at Lord’s, England have now fallen one position in the latest ICC WTC points table. That is because they have been docked two points by the ICC for slow over rate during the Lord’s Test.
England were found to be two overs behind the rate after time allowances were taken into consideration. Thus, according to Article 16.11.2 of the ICC World Test Championship playing conditions, in which a side is penalized one point for each over they are short of the target, Ben Stokes’ team suffered a two-point penalty.
After this two-point deduction, their ICC WTC points dropped from 24 to 22, out of the 36 points they had contested for. This meant their percentage points dropped from 66.67% to 61.11%. In the ICC WTC standings, England slipped from the second spot to third due to the drop in their percentage points, behind Sri Lanka, who have 66.67%.
The match referee also levied a fine of 10% on England for their slow over rate at Lord’s. This was according to Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which deals with the over-rate charges, in which players are fined 5% of their match fee for each over the team falls short in the allotted time.
England captain Ben Stokes pleaded guilty to the slow over rate offense, and hence no formal hearing was required.

Australia, who whitewashed the West Indies 3-0, are at the top of the ICC WTC points table with 36 points and 100%. They are followed by Sri Lanka (66.67%) and England (61.11%).
India, who have lost two Tests and won one match, are fourth with 12 points and 33.33%. Bangladesh, with 16.67%, are fifth, and the West Indies, who lost 3-0 to Australia, are last in the ICC WTC standings.
