Heinrich Klaasen Retires From Intl Cricket: South African wicketkeeper-batter Heinrich Klaasen has announced his retirement from international cricket at the age of 33 in a post on social media, claiming that he is at peace with this decision and that it will allow him to spend more time with his family.
Klaasen is considered one of the best T20 batters in the world, having proven his mettle in leagues and series all over the world. Not only has he been a standout player for the South African National Team in limited-overs cricket, but he has also been a star in some of the biggest franchise cricket teams in the world.
Most recently, Heinrich was representing the Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2025. After becoming the most expensive retained player in league history, Klaasen had his most successful season in the league, scoring 487 runs in 13 matches at an average of 44.27 and a strike rate of 172.70, making one 50 and a 100. He was a bright spark in an otherwise dismal season for the Sunrisers.

As for his career with the Proteas, Klaasen has played 60 ODIs and scored 2141 runs in the format at an average of 43.69 and a strike rate of 117.05. He has scored 11 fifties and four hundreds in ODIs. In 58 T20Is, he has scored 1000 runs at an average of 23.25 and a strike rate of 141.84.
He also played four Tests in his career and has not played one since 2023. In the format he is least recognised for, the 33-year-old made 104 runs in eight innings at an average of 13.
Heinrich Klaasen Retires From Intl Cricket
Heinrich Klaasen took to Instagram to share a post in which he posted pictures in the South African Cricket Team jersey with his family. In the caption, he wrote a note in which he announced his retirement.
“It is a sad day for me as I announce that I have decided to step away from international cricket. It took me a long time to decide what’s best for me and my family for the future. It was truly a very difficult decision but also one that I have absolute peace with. From the first day, it was the biggest privilege representing my country and it was everything that I have worked for and dreamed about as a young boy.”
“I have made great friendships and relationships that I will treasure for life. Playing for the Proteas gave me the opportunity to meet great people that changed my life, and to those people I can’t say thank you enough. My road to wearing the Proteas shirt was different than most and there were certain coaches in my career that kept believing in me – to them I will always be grateful,” he continued.
The limited-overs specialist then went on to say that while wearing the national team badge on his chest has been an honour, he is at peace with his decision to retire at the age of 33, writing,
“To have played with the Proteas badge on my chest was and will always be the biggest honour in my career. I look forward to spending more time with my family as this decision will allow me to do so. I will always be a big Proteas supporter and would like to thank everyone that supported me and my teammates during my career.”
As for some of his records, Klaasen will go down in history books for making the highest score in an ODI while batting at No. 5, when he made 174 runs in just 83 deliveries against Australia, hitting 13 sixes in that inning.
As he has been out of the Test side for two years, Heinrich Klaasen was not in the squad for the upcoming World Test Championship final 2025 between South Africa and Australia. And with no ICC competition for over a year, he has decided to call it quits now.
While he has retired from international cricket, Deinrich will still likely play in franchise cricket leagues all over the world. This means that we will most likely see him in the Sunrisers Hyderabad jersey in IPL 2026.
