Australian left-arm speedster Mitchell Starc delivered a telling blow on the first ball of the Adelaide Test match against India, which got underway on Friday. This is a day-night Test match, which is being played with the pink ball.
Starc dismissed India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal on the first ball of the second BGT 2024-25 Test. Starc bowled a full ball in the line of the stumps that swung out considerably. Jaiswal shuffled across the leg stump, and it was visible as the ball was delivered.
The ball straightened after pitching and hit Jaiswal’s pads on the full as he got imbalanced and missed his stroke. The umpire was quick to raise his finger as Jaiswal was dead plumb.
Starc roared fiercely in his celebration. Not so much that he had dismissed a batsman who had hit a century in Perth on the first ball. But also because Jaiswal had sledged Starc that he was “bowling too slow” for him during India’s second innings in Perth.
The angst in Starc’s celebration was palpable, and he let Jaiswal and everyone know that he is still one of the deadliest bowlers in the world.

Mitchell Starc Equals Record After Dismissing Jaiswal
Starc has taken a wicket on the first ball of a Test match three times in his career, which is the joint-most in the history of Test cricket. He equalled the record set by West Indies’ Pedro Collins.
The three instances of Mitchell Starc taking a wicket on the first ball of a Test came vs India in Adelaide 2024, vs England in Brisbane 2021, and vs Sri Lanka in Galle 2016. The batsmen he dismissed are Jaiswal, Rory Burns, and Dimuth Karunaratne.
Taking a Wicket on the First Ball of a Test most times:
Three times each by Pedro Collins and Mitchell Starc
Two times each by Richard Hadlee, Geoff Arnold, Kapil Dev, and Suranga Lakmal
Meanwhile, after Jaiswal’s wicket, KL Rahul and Shubman Gill have done well to survive the first hour. India are 30/1 after 10 overs. While Gill has played a few sublime strokes, Rahul has struggled so far.
