All Chennai Super Kings Retentions For IPL 2025: Five-time champions Chennai Super Kings have retained five players ahead of the IPL 2025 auction. They have retained a mixture of young guns and veteran talent.
Having retained five players including one not-so-uncapped star, CSK have spent Rs. 65 crore in getting back the players. This leaves them with 55 crores in their purse going into the auction.
With five retentions, the Super Kings have only one Right to Match (RTM) card left, which they can use to get back one of many big players they have had to let go. Here are all Chennai Super Kings retentions for IPL 2025.
All Chennai Super Kings Retentions For IPL 2025
1) Ruturaj Gaikwad – 18 Crore
It is not surprising that the Chennai Super Kings have picked their captain Ruturaj Gaikwad as the first retained star. Not only did he succeed Dhoni as the flagbearer of the franchise’s next phase, but he has also been their best batter over the past few seasons.
While Gaikwad might not be an Indian Cricket Team regular like other young openers in Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill, he certainly is one of the most promising Indian top-order batters across all formats.
He has won CSK several games with his ability to anchor an inning. In the 66 games across five seasons he has played for the Chennai-based franchise so far, the 27-year-old has scored 2380 runs at an average of 41.75. He is also the only Indian to win an Orange Cap with CSK.
Despite not making it to the playoffs in 2024, Chennai Super Kings have shown massive faith in Ruturaj Gaikwad as a player and as a captain, thus retaining him first.
2) Matheesha Pathirana – 13 Crore
A promising Sri Lankan pacer in the ilk of the legendary Lasith Malinga, Matheesha Pathirana has been great for the Chennai Super Kings over the past couple of years, despite playing only one full season in the league.
Having made his CSK debut in 2022, he got to play almost a full season in 2023, playing 12 matches and taking 19 wickets as the Super Kings won their fifth title. With an economy under eight in the IPL, Pathirana, despite being a bit injury-prone, can become the next great Sri Lankan bowler in the league.
3) Shivam Dube – 12 Crore
Shivam Dube has been an absolute rockstar for the Chennai Super Kings. After an unsuccessful stint with the Rajasthan Royals, Dube was bought by CSK in 222 and never looked back. A dependable yet explosive middle-order batter, Shivam showed in his first season that he was worth every penny.
But it was in 2023 when he shined the brightest, scoring over 400 runs with a near 160 strike rate, playing a big role in the Super Kings winning the title. On the back of his awesome stint with CSK, Shivam Dube has returned to the Indian T20I squad and is now even a World Cup winner.
4) Ravindra Jadeja – 18 Crore
An absolute legend of the league and the franchise, it wasn’t too surprising that Chennai Super Kings retained Ravindra Jadeja. However, the price of his retention did raise some eyebrows, only because the all-rounder seems to be in the twilight of his long career.
Heading into his 13th season with CSK, Jadeja is the second-highest wicket-taker in team history, with 142 scalps in 186 games. He is also the seventh-highest run scorer for the Super Kings and has won countless matches with the bat in the lower-middle order, including the 2023 IPL final.
Formerly seen as a potential captain, Ravindra Jadeja is now a veteran of the team who the franchise sees as a crucial piece of their side.
5) MS Dhoni – 4 Crore (Uncapped)
Any international cricketer who has not represented their national side in over five years can be retained as an uncapped player. This rule was brought back before IPL 2025 and is being called by many the ‘Dhoni Rule’ because MS Dhoni is its most famous subject.
The joint-most successful captain in IPL history is an absolute legend of the league. Playing for CSK since 2008, he has scored over 5000 runs for the franchise despite batting in the lower-middle order for much of his career. He also has the most match wins in the league with 150. What can be said about him that has not already been said a million times?
It is all but confirmed that this might be Dhoni’s last IPL season as a player. And although he is clearly not the player he once was, the veteran wicketkeeper is still a crucial senior voice on the pitch. The price of his retention will be paid multifold, seeing how many fans and sponsors he brings to the team.
Big Players Not Retained
While Chennai Super Kings attempted to hold together their core, they still had to let go of some of their best players. A name that immediately springs to mind is New Zealand keeper and opener Devon Conway. Not only is he in brilliant form, but he was also the team’s highest run scorer in 2023, amassing over 670 runs. But he did miss the whole 2024 season due to injury.
Other notable names missing from the retention list are pace-allrounders Shardul Thakur and Deepak Chahar, domestic fast-bowler Tushar Deshpande, and Sri Lankan spin maestro Maheesh Theekshana.
