Will Virat Kohli captain RCB in IPL 2025? In a massive development regarding Virat Kohli and Royal Challengers Bengaluru, the 35-year-old has reportedly “made it clear” to his franchise that he wishes to don the captain’s hat for one more season, which is the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season.
Kohli had led RCB from 2013 to 2021, the same year he also stepped down as India’s captain. He charged RCB to one final appearance in 2016, leading from the front by amassing 973 runs. However, RCB lost to Sunrisers Hyderabad in the final at their home ground, M Chinnaswamy Stadium.
After Kohli stepped down, RCB roped in South African Faf du Plessis to lead the side. In three seasons under du Plessis, RCB have reached the playoffs twice but failed to reach the final.
Will Virat Kohli captain RCB in IPL 2025?
According to ESPNcricinfo, Virat Kohli has “made it clear” to RCB that he “wants to be the captain” in the IPL 2025 season.
With Faf du Plessis being 40 years old, RCB might be on the lookout for a new captain either before or during the IPL 2025 mega auction. It has been made apparent over the last couple of seasons that Faf is not among their four best overseas players and might not even be retained for the IPL 2025 mega auction.
RCB are one of the three teams—apart from Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals—who have featured in all IPL seasons since the inaugural edition in 2008 but are yet to win the trophy even once. They have thrice reached the final—in 2009, 2011, and 2016—but faltered at the last hurdle.
Kohli’s record as RCB’s captain is ordinary: 66 wins and 70 losses, a win percentage of 46.15. He is currently the leading run scorer in IPL history, with 8004 runs; no other batsman has more than 7000 IPL runs. He has notched up eight centuries and 55 fifties in the IPL.
October 31 is the last date for the franchises to submit their list of retained players. Each franchise can retain up to six players—a maximum of five capped players (Indian and overseas) and a maximum of two uncapped players—through any combination of retentions and right-to-match (RTM) option.
