Thibaut Courtois And Rodrygo To Miss El Classico: Real Madrid attacker Rodrygo and goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois suffered injuries during the side’s most recent UEFA Champions League match against Borussia Dortmund and are set to miss the El Classico against arch-rivals FC Barcelona in La Liga this weekend.
Los Blancos took on Dortmund in their third league stage match of the UCL last night. This was the rematch of the Champions League final from last season. The Spanish giants conceded two goals in the first half but then fought back and netted five goals in the second half. Vinicius Jr. was the Player of the Match after scoring a hat-trick.
Thibaut Courtois And Rodrygo To Miss El Classico
In the 85th minute of the match, a couple of minutes after Real took the lead in the game, Rodrygo was forced off the field after suffering a hamstring injury. It is being reported by ESPN that the Brazil international will undergo further tests on Thursday to determine the extent of his injury.
As for Courtois, he has suffered what is understood to be a groin injury. Immediately following the match, it was understood that he would be up and ready in time for the Barca match this Sunday, October 27. But it is now being reported that he will be out of action for a couple of weeks, thus missing El Classico, which is just a few days away.
The news that Thibaut Courtois will indeed miss the clash against Barcelona was broken by journalist Fabrizio Romano. He tweeted,
“Thibaut Courtois has suffered a muscle injury, and he’s expected to miss El Clásico.”
The Belgian goalkeeper has had several bouts with injury as of late. He missed most of the 2023-24 season for Real Madrid, 42 games to be exact, due to a major injury in the knee that kept him out for about eight months. He added onto that injury with a meniscus tear, adding another month to his absence. He was out from August 2024 to April 2024.
This particular groin injury only adds to another groin injury he suffered just last month that saw him miss game time for three weeks.
For the El Classico against Barcelona, Brahim Diaz is expected to replace Rodrygo in the side, while backup goalkeeper Andriy Lunin, who kept the goal for most of the 2023-24 season, will replace Courtois.
With the massive win over Dortmund in the UCL, Real Madrid is now ninth in the league table with two wins and one loss in three games. On the other hand, their match against Barca is a big one, as Real is currently second in La Liga behind the Blaugrana.
