Ter Stegen Could Miss the Whole Season: What Happened?
It was the end of the first half, and the German international suddenly collapsed to the ground after claiming a corner. Barcelona players screamed for help as the injury looked so severe right away. The star player later was stretchered out of the field, and Spanish goalkeeper Iñaki Peña replaced him.
Barca manager Ansi Flick later confirmed the injury and discussed its severity.
“It doesn’t look good for Marc. We have to wait to know the full diagnosis of the injury, but it’s true it does appear to be really serious.”
“This injury makes us sad. When you win 5-1 at Villarreal, the fans here in the stadium, also those watching on television, saw a fantastic match.
The coach is happy for the incredible 5-1 win but, at the same time, was ‘sad’ due to his No.1 goalkeeper’s brutal injury. Flick also said that ‘the injury will be huge’
“Also from Villarreal, [they played with] unbelievable speed and were dynamic in the match. With great goals from us, we are very happy with the 5-1, but at the end we are sad because I think the injury will be huge, but we have to wait for information.”
“At the end, the team has good character,” Flick said of Barça’s ability to overcome setbacks this season.
“I would say the attitude is unbelievably good. I love it, every day, the mixture between very focused and also enjoying playing football. This is what we like.
Barcelona are six on six in the league after their last win. They lead the La Liga table with 18 points, 4 more than the defending champions and their arch-rivals Real Madrid. But Ter Stegen’s injury taints their expectation for a clean run in the league. He is the 9th player who is injured in the Barca squad including Gavi, Frenkie de Jong, Andreas Christensen, and their new signing Dani Olmo.
