IND vs BAN 1st Test Day 4 Report: It took India only 16.3 overs to take the remaining six Bangladeshi wickets in the first session of day 4 in Chennai. Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto top-scored for his side in their second innings with 82, but none of the other batters could go past 40.
R Ashwin, who had taken three wickets in the previous day, took three more wickets, while Ravindra Jadeja also snapped three scalps in the morning to bundle the visitors out for 234. This was the fourth instance of Ashwin registering a century and a five-for in the same Test match, and the second time in consecutive Tests at Chepauk.
Further, this was Ashwin’s 37th five-wicket haul, which brings him level with the legendary Shane Warne; only Sri Lankan Muthiah Muralidaran has more Test five-fors now than Ashwin – Muralidaran had 67 Test five-fors, a record unlikely to be broken even by Ashwin, who is 38 years old.
India claimed the win in Chennai by a whopping 280 runs, deflating Bangladesh, who had been on a high after a historic maiden test series win over Pakistan.
But India in India is a different beast altogether. This win meant that India took a 1-0 unassailable lead in the two-match series. It also meant that India will extend their dominance at home, having not lost a single home Test series since 2013.

Needing 357 more runs to win, Bangladesh started the day with two gorgeous cover drive boundaries by Shakib Al Hasan off Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah. Then, though Siraj and Bumrah tested Shakib and Shanto, beating them on their edges and hitting the veteran on his body, the first hour was wicketless. That would have given some relief for the visitors, who would have thought that they could make India field for longer today.
But once India’s spin-twins, Ashwin and Jadeja, got into the attack, the visitors collapsed and surrendered to one of the greatest bowling pairs of all time in Test cricket.
First, Ashwin had Shakib caught by Jaiswal at short leg. This wicket took the off-spinner to No. 8 on the all-time leading Test wicket-taker’s list, past Courtney Walsh’s tally of 519 wickets. Then it was time for Jadeja to strike, who dismissed Liton Das, the batter edging to first slip.
Mehidy Hasan Miraz decided to be adventurous and take on Ashwin by skipping down the track and looking to launch the off-spinner for a maximum. However, he could only hit as far as Jadeja at long-on.
Now batting with the tail, captain Shanto opted for a big heave, which Jadeja sensed coming and dragged the ball wide of off-stump. Shanto’s top edge was taken well by Bumrah on the off-side. Ashwin had Taskin Ahmed caught at mid-on, before Jadeja sealed the game by hitting the leg-stump of Hasan Madmud, who attempted a wild slog and missed the ball completely.
Another home Test match, another victory for India, and another Man of the Match award for Ravichandran Ashwin.
