The Indian Super League brought Indian football to a new era when it was first launched in 2014. A successor to the troubled I-LEague, which now acts as the second tier of Indian football, the ISL brought a lot of eyes and a whole lot of foreign players to Indian domestic football, especially in the first season.
With the likes of Diego Forlan, Robert Pires, Alessandro Del Piero, and Roberto Carlos (who was also named the Delhi Dynamos manager for a season) having played in the first season, the league was the boom that football in India desperately required for years.
In the decade since ISL started, Indian football has seen a lot of growth. More people follow the sport and the national team than ever, a decent set of domestic teams brings a lot of young players forward, and the Indian national team has improved a lot in terms of FIFA ranking in the past decade.
We will now look at all ISL league winners since 2014, who they defeated in the final, and how their tournament went that season. At the end, we will also look at which team has won the most ISL trophies and the managers with most ISL trophies.
2014 – Athletico de Kolkata
To launch the Indian Super League in the best way possible, several celebrities invested in and became part owners of the teams. For Athletico de Kolkata, it was none other than the former Indian cricket team captain and ‘Prince of Kolkata’ Saurav Ganguly, in partnership with Spanish giants Athletico Madrid.
Eight teams played in the 2014 season, and Athletico de Kolkata finished third to make their way into the semi-final, where they defeated Goa FC 4-2 on penalties after two goalless legs. ARK then won the final against the Kerala Blasters 1-0 in the final after scoring in the fifth and final minute of stoppage time to take the trophy home and become the inaugural winners of the ISL.
2015 – Chennaiyin FC
Chennaiyin FC, after topping the league stage the previous year, made it to the semi-final once again after finishing third on the league table. Following that, they took on defending champions Athletico de Kolkata in the semis and won 4-2 on aggregate.
In the final, Goa led the game against Chennaiyin 2-1 going into the 90th minute. Chennai scored via an own goal in the 90th minute and brought the scores level and then, in the first minute of stoppage time, they scored again to snatch the match and the title from right under Goa FC’s nose, becoming ISL league winners.
