Liverpool Star Questions Messi Winning Ballon dOrs: Lionel Messi’s safe is filled with 8 shining Ballon d’Or. Eight times in history: the Argentine is the one who won it the most. Though it’s a well-known secret that he wasn’t particularly the most deserving one on many occasions, it was rare for pundits and the media to discuss it.
But former Liverpool footballer and pundit Don Hutchison decided to make a bold statement. He was talking on Sony Sports Network ahead of the UEFA Champions League final between Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund
Liverpool Star Questions Messi Winning Ballon dOrs
According to Hutchison, the player who performed the best in that particular season will get his vote. Adding to that, he also mentioned that Messi was not always the best player when he won the Ballon d’Or. He also questioned the mysterious decision behind not giving Levendowski the Ballon d’Or a couple of years ago.
“I’ve not really got a preference, I just look at the player that I think has had a great year and a best year and that’s my vote. Sometimes when Messi won it, [he] was not necessarily the best player.”
“Don’t get me wrong, it’s great to have a Ballon d’Or, but I don’t think it’s the be-all and end-all for players. We’ve seen over the years that sometimes the votes can be a little skewed. How Lewandowski did not win it a few years ago was an absolute mystery. The players obviously want it because it’s a nice individual honor.
Messi’s many Ballon d’Or wins were filled with controversy, including last year’s win as the Argentine wasn’t the best player on the pitch that year. This has put the award’s relevancy under question.
When talking about the Real Madrid legend’s chances of winning the individual award, Hutchison said that Kroos would be happier winning UCL and EUROs than winning the Ballon d’Or.
“But if you said it Kroos, ‘you aren’t going to win the Ballon d’Or, but you’re going to win the Champions League and the Euros’, he would be more than happy with that.
