Shreyas Iyer Was Seen As Future India Captain: Former Chief Selector of the Indian Cricket Team MSK Prasad revealed that the selection committee used to look at Shreyas Iyer as the future captain of the national side and how much time they invested in him.
Iyer was a regular part of the national team at the start of the decade. An all-format player, he was considered one of the best players of the upcoming generation. Not only that, he was also seen as a future captain due to him being named the captain of the Delhi Capitals.

But a mixture of injuries and controversies with the BCCI has resulted in him no longer being a centrally contracted player.
“We had a succession plan ready for captaincy. We were looking for a player who could lead India post the MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, and Rohit Sharma eras. Shreyas Iyer was groomed, and he led India A in close to ten series, winning eight. We invested in him, unlike Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja,” Prasad told Boria Majumdar
MSK Prasad further went on to dwell upon why Iyer is no longer part of the team India plans but showed confidence that he will develop into a great captain in a few years, saying –
“He was unfortunately injured, and Rishabh Pant did well during that time. Prior to that, Iyer was Delhi Capitals‘ captain, and working under the coaching of Ricky Ponting helped him. He did a good thing by joining Kolkata Knight Riders and was helped by the franchise. He looked at ease there. With young players like Iyer, you need a better support system to help them in leadership duties. I am sure Shreyas Iyer will become a good captain in two or three years.”
After no longer being a part of the national team, which includes his exclusion from the 15-man squad for the 2024 T20 World Cup, Iyer has captained the Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL 2024 title.
It is not only the injuries that have kept Shreyas Iyer out of the national side. His refusal to play domestic cricket has also played a major role in that.
