R Ashwin Says He Had Decided to Quit Cricket: Even the great R Ashwin had had doubts over his career—and not when he was young and climbing the ladders, but when he was sitting with an already successful career. In 2017, Ashwin pondered strongly over quitting cricket and going for an MBA!
At that time, while he was still India’s premier Test spinner, Ashwin had lost his place in the white-ball teams.
It was an interesting and bizarre period in his career. After the 2017 Champions Trophy loss, R Ashwin remained away from the ODI and T20I teams.
While initially it was being said that the selectors and management had rested him, he was slowly phased out of the limited-overs scheme of things as wrist-spinners Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal made wonderful starts to their careers.
R Ashwin Says He Had Decided to Quit Cricket
It really hit hard when R Ashwin was not recalled as the 2019 World Cup approached.
“I decided to quit cricket. I was asking myself what would I do? And I said whatever I do in life, I would try to achieve excellence and be as good as I can be in that profession. I would probably try to do an MBA and probably be in marketing,” Ashwin told The Indian Express.
Ashwin’s wife, Prithi, was with him during his tough phase from 2017–2020, when he was out of the limited-overs India teams. Prithi reveals that it was the uncertainty and lack of communication from the selectors that hurt the off-spinner a lot.
“He didn’t know if he was dropped or rested. If someone told Ashwin, ‘come here, you are not good enough’, he would get out and work on it. But when he was not told why he wasn’t there, I saw him struggling,” Prithi Ashwin said.
The clock turned not too late, and Ashwin did make a comeback to both white-ball teams. Kuldeep and Chahal’s form dropped, and Ashwin featured in the T20 World Cups in 2021 and 2022 and also played a game in the World Cup in 2023.
The Tamil Nadu off-spinner recently played his 100th Test match and claimed his 500th Test scalp.
