England Shocks The World With The Win Vs India: It was unimaginable on Day 1 of this Test that England would get away in the 1st Test match of the Pataudi Trophy against India.
The match was played in Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, where the track provided enough spin for the Indian spin trio to wreak havoc. Despite England’s Bazball approach, they were bowled out for 246 in the 1st innings on Day 1 itself with Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, and Axar Patel combining to take 8 wickets.
On the same day, India got to an impressive start, finishing Day 1 on 119/1 on the back of a fiery half-century by Yashasvi Jaiswal.
Day 2 saw India bat all-day/ 80+ scores by KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja took India past the 400-run mark. On Day 3 India finished their 1st innings on 437, with a whopping 190-run lead.

But this is the moment when the match starts to turn around. In the 77 overs England batted on Day 3, they scored 316 runs. Ollie Pope’s stunning century resulted in England gaining a 126-run lead at the end of Day’s play with four wickets in hand and the dangerous Pope still on strike.

Ollie Pope kept his approach the same on Day 4, taking his score to 196 before being bowled by Jasprit Bumrah. England finished their innings at 420 with Rehan Ahmed and Tom Hartley playing supporting roles.
On Day 4, India needed 231 runs to win the 1st Test of the series. And if the first innings was any indication, this would not be a massive task. The chase started smoothly as the openers reached the 40-run mark before losing any wickets.
But then, the hero of the 1st innings Yashasvi Jaiswal lost his wicket, and the house of cards started collapsing. Shubman Gill lost his wicket on a duck in two balls. Rohit Sharma did not survive long after, with India losing their 3rd wicket at 63.
KL Rahul and Axar Patel did try to salvage the innings with a small partnership at this point. But when Axar lost his wicket at 95, the innings broke apart. KL Rahul followed suit quickly, and so did Ravindra Jadeja. ‘Spin specialist’ Shreyas Iyer went out cheaply as well at 13.

It was now up to the last proper batting pair in the team to dig the side out of a hole. India was 119/7 with 112 runs needed to win when Ravi Ashwin came out to bat alongside wicketkeeper Srikar Bharat. While Ashwin took a cautious approach, Bharat looked to attack.
But the win was not to be as Bharat lost his wicket at 176. One run later, Ashwin followed him back to the pavilion and India was down to their 10th wicket partnership with 54 runs still required.
Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj tried their hardest to do the impossible, but it was not to be as Tom Hartley took his 7th wicket of the innings on his Test debut. India were all-out for 202 and England won the 1st Test of the five-match series by 28 runs.
English spinners, who did not look like much of a threat in the 1st innings, completely decimated the Indian batting order in the 2nd innings. As previously stated, debutant Tom Hartley took 7 wickets in the last innings of the match, Jack Leach took two wickets, whereas Joe Root took one. In fact, all wickets in this innings, apart from Ravi Jadeja’s run-out, were all taken by spinners.
Ollie Pope, for his excellent 196 in the 2nd innings, was named the Player of the Match.
The 2nd Test match between India and England in the ongoing series will be played in Vishakhapatnam’s ACA-VDCA Stadium from February 2-6.
