Rinku Singh DRS Decision Sparks Row: Rinku Singh’s controversial DRS review in the ninth over of India’s 3rd T20I against Afghanistan sparked a row and discussion over the validity and correctness of the Decision Review System.
After Rohit Sharma won the toss and decided to bat first, India was in deep trouble following four wickets in the powerplay overs. With Yashasvi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli, Shivam Dube, and Sanju Samson back in the pavilion, Rinku Singh walked onto the pitch to partner Rohit and try stabilizing the innings.

In the ninth over of the innings, Rinku went to defend spinner Qais Ahmed’s delivery and the ball hit his pads. A confident appeal by the Afghanistan team was followed by umpire Virender Sharma raising his finger. The UP-based batter immediately appealed for a review.
While the review showed all reds when it came to the trajectory of the ball, Ultraedge showed a spike as the ball passed the bat, resulting in the on-field umpire’s decision being turned.
The controversy sparked from the fact that when Ultredge showed a spike, the second screen displayed what looked like a gap between the bat and the ball. The Afghanistan players too picked this up and held a lengthy conversation with the umpire. But at last, the third umpire’s decision stood.
Rinku Singh then went up to score a 39-ball-69, which was crucial for India crossing the 200-run mark while batting.
This was not the only controversial call by the umpires on the night. Later in the innings, a full-toss which was clearly over Rohit Sharma’s waist was not given a no-ball.
Another decision with larger ramifications came during the 2nd of two Super Overs of this match. After Rohit Sharma left the field to give way for a faster runner in Rinku Singh on the final ball of the 1st Super Over, he took to the field in the 2nd Super Over.
The rules state that if a batter is dismissed in the Super Over, he cannot come out to bat in any other Super Overs in the match.
All these controversies should not cloud the fact that we watched an exciting and historic T20I between India and Afghanistan in what was ultimately the dead rubber of the series.
