India vs South Africa Pitch Rated Unsatisfactory: The pitch of the Newlands Cricket Ground in Cape Town, which was the site for the second Test match between India and South Africa during their recent series has been rated ‘unsatisfactory’ by the ICC.
India won the second match in the two-match series against South Africa to end the series in a 1-1 tie. But it was not India’s victory that gathered headlines in the aftermath of the match, but how quickly the match ended.
After South Africa was bowled out for 55 in the first innings, India lost their last six wickets without adding a single run to the scoreboard to get to a total of 153. India ultimately won the match by 7 wickets in the second session of Day 2 of the match.
The Test match at Newlands only lasted 642 balls, making it the shortest Test match in which there has been a winner. The record previously was held by a 1932 Test between Australia and South Africa, which the Aussies won in 656 balls.

ICC Releases Ruling On India vs. South Africa Pitch
India vs South Africa Pitch Rated Unsatisfactory
After how quickly the match ended, many claimed that the pitch was unfit to play upon, but ICC begged to differ, slapping an ‘unsatisfactory’ rating on the pitch.
“The pitch in Newlands was very difficult to bat on. The ball bounced quickly and sometimes alarmingly throughout the match, making it difficult to play shots… Several batters were hit on the gloves and many wickets also fell due to the awkward bounce,” said match referee Chris Broad in a statement released by the ICC.
ICC ruling states that if a pitch has been rated ‘unsatisfactory’, a demerit point can be incurred upon it. On the other hand, i a pitch is rated ‘unfit’, it will be slapped with 3 demerit points. These points roll over for a span of five years.
If a venue accumulates six demerit points in a five-year period, it is suspended from hosting any international matches for 12 months.
As the governing body over the host ground, Cricket South Africa has 14 days to appeal against the rating sanction.
