Hardik Pandya out of the World Cup 2023: Prasidh Krishna Comes In
Pandya’s injury has paved the way for Prasidh Krishna’s World Cup dream to come true. Krishna, who has 29 wickets in 17 ODIs, last played for India in two ODIs against Australia just before the World Cup, where he took three wickets. He has also been in good form for Karnataka in the ongoing Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, claiming five wickets in as many matches.
What Happened?
Pandya’s injury occurred when he appeared to twist his left ankle while attempting to stop a shot in his follow-through during his first over against Bangladesh. Subsequently, he was unable to continue playing in that match and was sent for scans. As per the sources, he suffered ligament damage and has been undergoing rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru.
Hardik Responded
The vice-captain took to X to share an emotional message with the fans.
“Tough to digest the fact that I will miss out on the remaining part of the World Cup. I’ll be with the team, in spirit, cheering them on every ball of every game. Thanks for all the wishes, the love, and the support has been incredible. This team is special and I’m sure we’ll make everyone proud. Love, always, HP.”
Suryakumar’s Upset, Shami’s Bloom
After Hardik’s injury, India reshaped their XI by dropping Shardul Thakur and including Suryakumar Yadav and Mohammed Shami. This tactical shift involved fielding six specialist batters, one all-rounder, and four specialist bowlers in their World Cup matches against New Zealand, England, and Sri Lanka. Although Suryakumar has only scored 63 runs at a strike rate of 105 in three innings, Shami has been a standout performer, amassing 14 wickets in 22 overs at an average of 6.71 and an economy rate of 4.27.
Having secured seven wins in as many games, India became the first team to qualify for the semi-finals after a resounding 302-run victory against Sri Lanka in Mumbai. Their upcoming match against South Africa in Kolkata on Sunday could determine the table-topper before their final league fixture against the Netherlands in Bengaluru on November 12.
