CM Punk and Cody Rhodes Set WWE Title Match for SummerSlam
Nick Aldis returned from administrative leave and welcomed new WWE Undisputed Champion CM Punk to SmackDown. Punk said he planned to defend the title regularly and challenged anyone in the locker room, including Sami Zayn, GUNTHER, Finn Bálor, Damian Priest, Trick Williams, and others.
Cody Rhodes then interrupted and reminded Punk that their title match had been building for years. Punk admitted they could not avoid it any longer and expected it would happen eventually. Cody immediately challenged him for SummerSlam. The two shook hands, and Aldis officially confirmed CM Punk vs. Cody Rhodes for the WWE Undisputed Championship at SummerSlam.
Finn Balor vs Tama Tonga
Finn Bálor defeated Tama Tonga in a hard-fought singles match on SmackDown. Bálor started fast with strikes and a dropkick before Tama took control with help from Talla Tonga at ringside. After the break, both men traded momentum with several near falls.
Tama hit the Cutthroat and Revolution Angel’s Wings, but Bálor kicked out. Finn responded with a Sling Blade, Shotgun Dropkick, and a suicide dive before returning to the top rope. He finished the match with the Coup de Grace to earn the pinfall victory. Afterward, Talla Tonga entered the ring, but Bálor escaped safely up the ramp.
“Big” Jim Uso vs Royce Keys
The Bloodline came to SmackDown looking for Solo Sikoa, but Royce Keys interrupted instead. Keys defended Solo and reminded Jacob Fatu that they had been like brothers for 14 years. Jimmy Uso challenged Keys, but Fatu chose not to get involved.
During the match, Solo appeared at ringside to help Jimmy, but Fatu returned and attacked him. The distraction allowed Jimmy to hit a spear and pin Keys. After the match, Fatu continued attacking Solo until Keys tried to stop him. Fatu responded by superkicking Keys but spared Solo with a chair shot. Instead, he warned Solo to fall in line with the family on Raw.
Alexa Bliss vs Jade Cargill
Jade Cargill defeated Alexa Bliss after a competitive match on SmackDown. Alexa took advantage of Charlotte Flair distracting Jade early, but Cargill regained control with powerful offense. Outside interference from B-FAB, Michin, and Charlotte affected the closing moments.
Bliss nearly stole the win before Jade hit a pump kick and finished the match with Jaded for the pinfall. After the match, Michin tried to attack Alexa with a chair, but Charlotte made the save. The Baddies then overwhelmed Flair and trapped Alexa’s arm in the chair before stomping on it. Bliss was left clutching her badly injured arm.
Carmelo Hayes vs Trick Williams
Trick Williams and Carmelo Hayes had another hard-fought match with both men trading nearfalls throughout. Hayes hit a diving DDT and a superkick, while Trick answered with powerful offense, including a Book End and Cyclone Kill. Neither wrestler could keep the other down.
Near the end, Hayes accidentally knocked Lil Yachty into the ringside area before climbing to the top rope. Baron Corbin suddenly appeared and pulled Hayes off the turnbuckle, causing the referee to end the match by disqualification. Hayes was declared the winner, but the rivalry remained far from over.
GUNTHER Attacks Nick Aldis After SummerSlam Title Match Rejection
GUNTHER demanded that Nick Aldis give him a SummerSlam title match against either Cody Rhodes or CM Punk. Aldis refused and instead announced a tag team match for Saturday Night’s Main Event, with Cody Rhodes and CM Punk facing GUNTHER and Sami Zayn.
Furious with the decision, GUNTHER attacked Aldis and repeatedly locked in the Gojira Clutch. Referees and producers pulled him away several times, but he kept returning to choke out the SmackDown General Manager. Cody Rhodes finally rushed to the ring to stop the attack as the show went off the air.
