The UP Warriorz have won their first match in the ongoing Women’s Premier League 2026, defeating defending champions, the Mumbai Indians Women, in dominant fashion.
Tonight’s game was Match 8 of WPL 2026, played at the Dr. DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai. The Warriorz won the toss and decided to bowl first.
UP Warriorz Win First Game Of The Season WPL 2026
The Indians got off to a decent start to their batting, especially seeing how the first innings have been so far in this competition. While Mumbai batted slowly, making only 23 runs in the powerplay, the team did not lose any wickets.
Among the openers, Amanjot Kaur kept the scoreboard going. On the other hand, wicketkeeper Gunalan Kamalini was visibly struggling to make runs. But it was AMnjot who was dismissed first, in the eighth over by Deepti Sharma for 38 off 35 after being caught at deep mid-wicket.
Just an over later, the other opener got out, as Kamalini was sent back to the pavilion after making just five runs off 12 deliveries by Sophie Ecclestone, caught at long-off.
This brought the dangerous duo of English all-rounder Nat Sciver-Brunt and MI-W captain Harmanpreet Kaur to the crease.
Harman, after a captain’s knock in the previous game, got off to a decent start today as well, but got out in the 13th over after making 16 off 11 by Asha Sobhana after a scintillating catch by Chloe Tyron.
At this point, the Mumbai Indians were reeling at 74/3 in the 13th over. However, what was to follow was the first solid partnership of the match between Sciver-Brunt and Nicola Carey. The two batted for the next seven overs together and not only took the team past 100 but also past 150.
Before getting out in the final over, Nat Sciver-Brunt made 65 off 43. Meanwhile, Carey made 32 off 20 and was unbeaten at the end of the innings, which ended at 161/5 at the end of the allotted 20 overs.

UP Warriorz, up until this point, had played three games in WPL 2026 and had won none. Their chase today got off to a decent start. The opening duo of Kiran Navgire and skipper Meg Lanning scored 42 runs in the powerplay.
But then, on the first delivery of the seventh over, the skipper departed, caught at backward square leg and dismissed by Sciver-Brunt for 25 off 26.
A second wicket came soon after, as Kiran Navgire was dismissed in the same over for 10 off 12, caught at a similar spot as her opening partner.
The third-wicket partnership for UP-W was between Phoebe Lichfield and Harleen Deol, which ended up being a match-saving one for the Warriorz. The two batted for the next eight overs together and made 73 runs as a duo. The two not only played around with and dominated the MI-W bowling, but they also looked in excellent form, especially Harleen.
By the time Litchfield got out at the end of the 15th over by Amelia Kerr for 25 off 22, the UP Warriorz score was 118/3, as they needed 44 runs in the last five overs.
At this point, Deol, who was on the brink of reaching her half-century, picked the pace up. First, she reached the 50-run mark, and then started racing towards the target. Harleen, along with a slogging Chloe Tyron, took the Warriorz home with ease. Harleen Deol scored 64 runs off 39 balls, while Chloe Tyron contributed 27 runs off just 11 balls.
UP Warriorz defeated the Mumbai Indians Women by seven wickets with 11 balls remaining. For her unbeaten knock with the bat, Harleen Deol was named the Player of the Match.
This was the Warriorz’s first win of the season after back-to-back-to-back losses to start their season off. With one win, three losses, two points, and the worst net run rate of the league, the UP Warriorz are still at the bottom of the points table.
On the other hand, this was the second loss of the season for the Mumbai Indians Women. With two wins, two losses, a positive net run rate, and four points, the Indians are second on the points table, behind the Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
