Will MS Dhoni Retire After IPL 2025? Ponting Ponders: MS Dhoni has been under the gunpoint after having an abysmal season in IPL 2025 so far. Many are questioning the legendary 5-time IPL winner for his decisions as well as intent when the yellow army has been getting tormented on the ground by the opposition.
The cry for his retirement has been on air more than ever and when Punjab Kings manager Ricky Ponting sat in front of the Indian Express interviewer, the question naturally popped up.
Will MS Dhoni Retire After IPL 2025? Ricky Ponting Anwers
When asked about what he thinks about MSD’s current form, Ponting stayed on the wicket keeping aspect initially and noted how quick the CSK talisman is still at the age of 43.
‘Well his keeping is not getting any worse, that’s one thing I do know; he’s not missing many standing up to the stumps against the spinners, as good as ever,” Ponting said.
MS Dhoni batted at 9 against RCB and has been under scrutiny in the following matches as well when he came a bit earlier but failed to pump up the scoreboard. Ponting, though, was reluctant to question one of the most successful franchises in the history of the tournament.
“Look, you are not going to argue with anything CSK do, they are one of the most successful teams in IPL history,” said Ponting. “They have had consistent coaching for a long time and generally make the right decisions. With the impact player rule now, Dhoni bats after other serious ball strikers within their own right. I guess he has played a slightly diminished role in the last couple of years, just coming in for the last 10-12 balls and trying to make a big impact. Dhoni is still dangerous in the IPL.”
Then came the question about MS Dhoni’s retirement. Ponting said that this season will lay a major part in that decision.
“It might just depend on how this season goes. If he can have a real impact with the bat, I think he will keep playing. If his batting output drops, he might start thinking about it. He’s been a terrific player for a long time.”
CSK are 9th on the table after winning only once in 4 matches. After starting the season with a brilliant win against Mumbai Indians, their last 3 matches have ended in loss. They will now travel to Punjab to face PBKS at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium on April 8.
