Assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate confirmed on Monday that Bumrah is available for selection, but the final decision will hinge on conditions, pitch behavior, and the looming third Test at Lord’s, which begins just four days after Edgbaston.
“It’s not about fitness — Jasprit is ready,” ten Doeschate said. “It’s about when and where we get the most from him. We’re looking at the forecast, the nature of the surface, and whether it makes sense to hold him for Lord’s or Manchester.”
Conditions Could Favour Spin
India are not rushing into a decision, though they lost the first match. Edgbaston’s surface is reportedly dry beneath a grassy top, which could open the door for India to field two spinners — Ravindra Jadeja alongside either Kuldeep Yadav or Washington Sundar.
“All three spinners have bowled well in training,” ten Doeschate noted. “Washi gives us balance with the bat. The question is whether we opt for the attacking spinner or a more rounded allrounder.”
Rain could also play a role, with light showers forecast on the first, fourth, and final days. This, combined with Edgbaston’s sub-surface dryness, may prompt India to back their spinners while managing Bumrah’s workload with a long series in mind.

India’s conundrum doesn’t end with Bumrah. The allrounder slot is under scrutiny, with Nitish Kumar Reddy emerging as a strong contender after an impressive debut century last December in Melbourne. He was actively involved in close-catching drills on Monday, alternating with Sai Sudharsan at gully and fourth slip.
“Nitish is very close,” said ten Doeschate. “We picked Shardul for his bowling last time, but we’re considering how to bring in a batting allrounder this time — and Nitish is top of that list.”
Fielding Reshuffle Continues
India’s slip cordon, exposed in Leeds after a series of missed chances, has also undergone a reshuffle. Karun Nair, KL Rahul, and Shubman Gill retained their slip positions, while Nitish and Sudharsan rotated through support roles. A black curtain was used in drills to simulate blind spots and sharpen reflexes — a response to dropped chances that turned the previous match in England’s favour.
The team remains reluctant to compromise on batting depth, even as captain Shubman Gill had previously stated India might be prepared to go with four specialist bowlers if it meant taking 20 wickets. That calculation, however, appears to be under revision.
“It’s easy to talk about four tailenders when you’re 430 for 3,” ten Doeschate observed. “But when you’re 200 for 5, that looks a lot different. We’re trying to strike the right balance — we need to take 20 wickets, but we also need runs.”
With final decisions still pending, India are attempting to piece together a team that can both compete at Edgbaston and stay fresh for a rapid turnaround at Lord’s. Whether or not Bumrah plays, the message is clear: India are thinking long-term — and cannot afford another slip.
