The Sunrisers Hyderabad have risen to the top four with a victory over the Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2026. But why did CSK lose to RCB?
Today’s game was Match 27 of IPL 2026. It was played at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Hyderabad, with the away team winning the toss and deciding to bowl first. The Sunrisers got off to a solid start on the back of a record 50 by Abhishek Sharma. However, regular wickets in the middle overs meant that they could not breach the 200-run mark and ended their innings at 194/9.
In response, CSK too got off to a great start, but they too faced the problem of regular wickets. Couple that with the fact that none of their batters made more than 34 runs, which means that they failed in chasing down a big target, finishing their 20 overs with the score of 184/8.

Why Sunrisers Hyderabad Beat Chennai Super Kings
1) Abhishek Sharma Dominates
The Sunrisers Hyderabad, for the past couple of years, has been quite dependent on their explosive opening duo of Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head. This season, they have been hit and miss, with some good performances under their belt but no consistency.
Tonight, this opening pair gave the Sunrisers a brilliant start in the powerplay. While Head played the supporting role, Abhishek dominated. In the first three overs, while Sharma hit a few boundaries, Travis struggled. After three overs, the Aussie was batting at three off 10 while the score was 23/0.
But the fourth over brought about a shift. Bowled by Anshul Kamboj, Abhishek Sharma hit a six and two fours as the over went for 15 runs. Then, in the fifth over, bowled by Matthew Short, Sharma hit three fours and two sixes. While the over went for 25 runs, the young opener brought about his 50 in 15 balls, the joint-fastest this season.
It was only in the final over of the powerplay that the Super Kings pulled the match back a bit. Head finally opened up his hands and hit a couple of boundaries before getting out on the fifth ball of this over by Mukesh Choudhary.
Then, on the final ball of the over, stand-in captain Ishan Kishan was out for a duck. And just like that, from 75/0 in 5.4 overs, SRH went to 75/2 in six overs. While the batting team did lose a couple of wickets right at the end, it was still a solid powerplay for the batting side, which provided them with a base to put up a solid score.
For CSK, Anshul Kamboj and Jamie Overton took three wickets each, with the former doing so with a stellar economy of 7.33.
2) Klaasen Anchors Amid Regular Wickets
After the first two wickets for Hyderabad fell, another wicket fell every couple of overs. Abhishek Sharma, after making a dominant 59 off 22, got out in the eighth over. Then, in the 11th over, Aniket Verma was dismissed for two off four.
Nitish Kumar Reddy, who has been in some solid form this season, made just 12 runs in eight balls before his wicket in the 14th over.
Amidst all this, Heinrich Klaasen stood firm at one end. Rather than playing his regular aggressive cricket, the South African kept in mind the importance of his wicket. He played cautiously while peppering in a few boundaries.
While unable to form boundaries, Klaasen ensured that he stood around and made runs from one end while wickets fell at the other. He reached his half-century in 32 balls. He would go on to make 59 off 39 before being bowled by Anshul Kamboj in the 18th over.
Heinrich Klaasen’s contribution and importance to this innings can be understood by the fact that after his wicket, the score was 177/6 with 16 deliveries remaining. In those 16 balls, SRH only managed to make 17 runs, despite the likes of Liam Livingstone and Aniket Verma on the crease.
Despite not being able to make runs at the death, the Sunrisers Hyderabad managed to get to a respectable total of 194/9 in 20 overs, thanks to the anchoring role played by Klaasen.
3) No Leader In The CSK Batting Order
To chase a total of around 200 runs or more, at least one batter on the side has to take charge and score big. However, CSK did not find that leader in this game.
Sanju Samson, who has scored a century this season, was the first one to depart in the second over, getting out for seven off three.
Despite that early wicket, the Super Kings got off to a flying start to their innings. While Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad finally looked in good colour, Ayush Mhatre dominated from the moment he took to the crease. In four overs, the total was already 60/1.
Even after such a start, wickets kept falling regularly. After getting solid starts to their innings, batters just kept throwing away their wickets.
In the fifth over, Mhatre became Nitish Kumar Reddy’s second wicket of the night. Then, at the start of the fifth, Gaikwad got out for cheap once again, getting out for 19 off 13.
In the middle overs, while Chennai needed to stay around the required run rate after going over it in the powerplay, Matt Short at No. 4 played a very slow inning, making 34 off 30. Sarfaraz Khan, too, did not impress. Despite hitting a few boundaries, he got out for 25 off 19 in the 11th over. On the other hand, Short batted till the 16th over and never accelerated.
Dewald Brevis made a duck. And so, at the end of the 16th over, the score was 149/6 with 45 runs required in four overs. Shivam Dube was on strike on 20 off 14. After settling onto the pitch, the explosive batter needed to pick the pace up. Instead, he got out in the 17th over for 21 off 16.
The task of making 40 runs in three overs fell into the laps of Jamie Overton and Anshul Kamboj. While the two bowling all-rounders tried, they were not going to get the job done.
The Chennai Super Kings lost this game by 10 runs, suffering their fourth defeat of the season. On the other hand, with these wins, the Sunrisers Hyderabad have three wins in six games and sit fourth on the points table. For his fine spell of 3/29, taking wickets of Ruturaj Gaikwad, Matt Short, and Sarfaraz Khan, Eshan Malinga was named the Player of the Match.
