The Rajasthan Royals suffered their first defeat of IPL 2026 after being thoroughly beaten by the Sunrisers Hyderabad. But why did SRH defeat RR in this game?
The game was Match 21 of IPL 2026. It was played at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Hyderabad and saw the away team win the toss and decide to bowl first. Despite striking early, RR gave away a few too many runs as the Sunrisers managed to reach a total of 216/6 in 20 overs.
In response, the Royals’ top order collapsed. Some disaster management by the lower-middle order meant that Rajasthan was able to reach 159 runs before getting all out, losing the game by 57 runs.
Here, we will discuss the three reasons why Rajasthan Royals lost to Sunrisers Hyderabad in today’s game of the Indian Premier League.
Why Rajasthan Royals Lost To Sunrisers Hyderabad
1) Failing To Capitalise On Early Wicket
Just like RR’s last game against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, they managed to pick up a wicket on the first ball of the game, as Jofra Archer surprised Abhishek Sharma with a quick bouncer. The opener was caught at deep third man for a golden duck.
However, despite that early wicket and some fine bowling by the Royals’ pace duo of Archer and Nandre Burger, they failed to capitalise on the early wicket.
While Travis Head was struggling at one end, captain Ishan Kishan started taking the attack to the bowlers. At the end of the powerplay, the score was 51/1.
Head finally departed after making a run of 18 in the seventh over. But on the other end, Kishan kept dealing with boundaries. The incoming Heinrich Klaasen joined the party, and at the 11th over mark, the score was 110/2, with Ishan scoring a 50 in 30 balls.
The skipper made 91 runs in 44 balls before getting out in the 14th over. But by then, the genie was out of the bottle, and the Sunrisers Hyderabad managed to make a 200+ score.
2) Praful Hinge’s Dream Debut
Vidharba pace bowler Praful Hinge made his IPL debut tonight. He was bought in the auction by SRH for Rs. 30 lakh. Opening the bowling for his side tonight, he won the game for Hyderabad in the very first over.
The 24-year-old became the first bowler to take three wickets in the first over in the IPL. On the second ball of the over, he dismissed the in-form Vaibhav Sooryavanshi for a golden duck, who skied the ball and was caught behind.
Then, on the fourth ball of the over, yet another in-form batter, Dhruv Jurel, failed to read a slower one and was played on, yet another duck in the top order for the Royals.
Hinge finished his dream debut over in the IPL with yet another golden duck, dismissing Lhuan-dre Pretorius, who was caught at square leg while looking to hit a boundary.
In all, a memorable debut for young pacer Praful Hinge was enough to seal this game with 19 overs to spare.
3) Seniors Failed To Save A Sinking Ship
At the end of the first over while chasing a 217-run target, the Rajasthan Royals were reeling at 1/3. However, on the crease were in-form and experienced batter Yashasvi Jaiswal and team captain Riyan Parag. The two needed to play out of their skin to ensure their team’s fifth victory of the season.
But that was not to happen. Before the end of the powerplay, the match that looked nearly over would be dead and buried.
In the second over, bowled by pacer Sakib Hussain, who, too, was making his IPL debut tonight, got the wicket of the ever-dangerous Jaiswal, who looked to cut a short ball but was instead caught at the third-man boundary for one off five. The score was not 2/3.
Praful Hinge would return to bowl the third over and would add a cherry to his debut sundae with the wicket of Riyan Parag for four off six. At this point, the score was 9/5.
In the threat of losing the game by over 100 runs, Ravindra Jadeja and Donovan Ferreira stepped up. While the game never tilted towards the side of the Royals, ever for the slightest, the two made 45 off 32 and 69 off 44, respectively. Coupled with a spirited 25 off 11 knock by Tushar Deshpande, the Royals of Rajasthan managed to get to a total of 159 in 19 overs before getting all out, losing the game by only 57 runs in this IPL 2026 clash.
Praful Hinge ended his night with dreamy figures of 4/34; meanwhile, Hussain bowled a four-over spell of 4/24, picking up wickets at the death.
