Why Punjab Kings Beat Lucknow Super Giants: The Punjab Kings stay at the top of the points table with a victory over the Lucknow Super Giants in IPL 2026. But why did LSG lose to PBKS?

Today’s game was Match 29 of IPL 2026. It was played at the PCA New Cricket Stadium in New Chandigarh, with the away team winning the toss and deciding to bowl first. The Kings lost an early wicket but dominated following that. Priyansh Arya and Cooper Connolly had a 182-run partnership in about 13 overs. Combined with a strong finish, Punjab reached a humongous total of 254/7 in 20 overs.

In response, the Super Giants lost wickets at regular intervals. While several of their batters got decent starts, none of them converted them into a big total. As a result, LSG was restricted to a respectable yet losing total of 200/5 in 20 overs.

Here, we will discuss the three reasons why Punjab Kings beat Lucknow Super Giants in this game of IPL 2026.

Why Punjab Kings Beat Lucknow Super Giants

1) Top Order Dominates

The Punjab Kings’ top order in this match, apart from one exception, fired massively today, making 185 runs in less than 14 overs.

The Kings had a poor start, as Prabhsimran Singh was out for a duck in the first over. But as soon as Cooper Connolly came to strike, the flow of the match shifted dramatically.

The duo of Connolly and Priyansh Arya brought the score to 63/1 at the end of the powerplay. 20 of these runs were made in the sixth over, bowled by Mohsin Khan.

Arya would reach his 50 in 19 balls in the ninth over. At the end of that over, the score had crossed the 100-run mark. Despite fielding restrictions being lifted following the powerplay, these two batters did not slow down, scoring 10 runs or more in each over bar one following the sixth-over mark.

This included the historic 13th over. Bowled by Aiden Markram, the South African conceded 32 runs in just six legal deliveries. This was because of the five shots hit in this over, three by Connolly and two by Priyansh.

By the time Cooper Connolly was dismissed in the 14th over by Prince Yadav, 185 runs had already been put on the board. The Australian lost his wicket after making 87 off 46, missing out on his first IPL ton.

M Siddharth would dismiss Arya in the very next over. He lost his wicket even closer to a 100, making 93 off 37 balls. While both the explosive batters got out one after another, they had more than done their job for the night, taking the score close to 200 all by themselves.

2) A Strong Finish To The PBKS Batting

After Punjab lost two wickets back to back, it seemed that the run rate might slow down. This notion was strengthened with captain Shreyas Iyer’s wicket in the 16th over. But the PBKS middle order was about to give their team a strong finish.

Marcus Stoinis came in to bat at No. 6 to anchor at the death. He would only get run out on the final ball of the innings after making 29 off 16.

Nehal Wadhera made 13 off seven, hitting a boundary and a six in his short but impactful innings. Speaking of impact, Shashak Singh dominated, especially in the 19th over, where he hit a four and two sixes.

These three came together to make 59 runs together in 29 balls, which makes their combined strike rate over 200. And it was their contributions right towards the end that would take the Punjab Kings core to 254 runs in 20 overs.

It should be noted that despite this absolute belting of the LSG bowling attack, Prince Yadav had a solid outing. His four-over spell generated impressive figures of 2/25 with an economy of 6.25.

3) No Massive Scores In The LSG Batting Order

While several Lucknow Super Giants batters got off to solid starts and even made decent runs, there was no one here who played a massive innings, which is crucial if a team is to make anywhere near 250 runs.

The opening duo of Mitchell Marsh and Ayush Badoni gave LSG a decent start, but they still fell behind the required run rate. The two made 61 runs in the powerplay before Badoni got out on the final ball of the sixth over for 25 off 21.

It must be noted that the Super Giants shuffled their batting order once again in this match. Marsh too had a solid outing, as the Australian made 40 off 28 before his dismissal in the 12th over.

Skipper Rishabh Pant came in to bat at number three. He finally showed some of his old flair with the bat today, making 43 off 23. He would end up being his team’s leading run scorer tonight before getting out in the 13th over.

At this point, the score was 128/3, as LSG required 127 runs in just over seven overs, a nigh-on impossible task. A task that fell on the shoulders of Nicholas Pooran, who had been severely underperforming this season.

Pooran’s bad run of form continued in this match as well, as he got out in the 15th over after a run-a-ball nine.

The pair of Aiden Markram and Mukul Choudhary fought till the very end, chasing a total they were never going to reach. The two made 42 off 22 and 21 off 17, respectively. Lucknow would end their innings at 200/5, losing this match by a whopping 54 runs. With this loss, they now sit at eighth on the points table with only two wins in six matches.

For his scintillating performance in this game, Priyansh Arya was named the Player of the Match. As for the Punjab Kings, they remain the only unbeaten team this season as they shot to the top of the league table with five wins, one no result, and 11 points in six games.
