Abhishek Sharma may be on his way out of Sunrisers Hyderabad. Reports suggest the opener is unhappy with the franchise. The main reason appears to be captaincy. SRH handed the captain’s role to Ishan Kishan. Abhishek had been with the team for a long time and had hopes of leading the side.
Pat Cummins is also likely to miss much of the 2027 season. His international schedule is very busy. That makes SRH’s leadership plan even more important. With Kishan taking charge, Abhishek’s future at the club has become uncertain.
Abhishek joined SRH in 2019. He has been one of their most important players. But sources say the tension started after Kishan was made captain last season. It is now believed that Abhishek is looking for a new team.
Several franchises have been linked with him. Mumbai Indians, Gujarat Titans, and Punjab Kings are among the names mentioned. Delhi Capitals could also be an option. His mentor, Yuvraj Singh, is part of the Delhi setup now. However, no serious deal has been made yet.
There is also the question of where Abhishek could go. Not many teams need a new captain. Kolkata Knight Riders and Lucknow Super Giants are possible options. Most other teams already have their leadership sorted. So even if SRH agrees to let him go, finding the right move will not be easy.
A trade or a cash deal are both possible. But many things would need to fall into place. SRH may also try to convince him to stay. He is one of their most valuable players. Abhishek is currently the World No. 2 batter in T20 cricket. He is one of the biggest names in the format.
SRH CEO K Shanmugam has denied the talk. He said the chatter is “not true”. Sources close to the player also say nothing is happening right now. Still, the IPL world is watching closely.
Franchises have just over a month to finalise their retentions. The mini-auction is in December. For now, Abhishek’s future at SRH remains unclear. He may stay or may leave. But the situation is one to follow in the coming weeks.
IPL 2027 Likely to Begin on March 10 as BCCI Confirms 74-Match Season Plans
The next IPL season is likely to begin in March 2027. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia has told PTI that the board is looking at a window from March 10 to May 15. There is no official confirmation yet. The plan is to finish before the worst of the summer heat in India. Saikia also said the IPL cannot be moved to a different time of year. The international cricket calendar does not allow it.
The 2027 season will have 74 matches. That is the same as recent years. There will be 70 league games and 4 playoff games, including the final. IPL chairman Arun Dhumal had talked about increasing the number to 94. But that change would only happen from 2028, not 2027. Saikia repeated that the count will stay at 74 for now.
The IPL 2027 auction will be held in Goa. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed the news on Wednesday. The auction will take place in December. It marks a return to India after three straight overseas auctions. Those were held in Saudi Arabia, Dubai, and Abu Dhabi. This will be the final mini-auction of the current cycle.
Several teams have already made changes ahead of the new season. Rishabh Pant has returned to Delhi Capitals. Kuldeep Yadav has moved from Delhi Capitals to Lucknow Super Giants in a player swap. Chennai Super Kings have appointed former India fast bowler Zaheer Khan as their head coach. Kolkata Knight Riders are looking for a new captain after Ajinkya Rahane retired from all cricket.
The full schedule has not been released. The BCCI will announce it closer to the start of the season. Royal Challengers Bengaluru are the defending champions. They won in 2025 and again in 2026. That was their second title in a row.
