Vaibhav Suryavanshi-Youngest Player in IPL: Rajasthan Royals signed 13-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi from Bihar in the IPL 2025 mega auction earlier this week in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Before the auction, he was the youngest player to enter the pool in the IPL auction. Now, he is the youngest cricketer to be signed by a team.
Vaibhav Suryavanshi-Youngest Player in IPL History
Hailing from Samastipur, Bihar, Suryavanshi is a top-order batter who made his Ranji Trophy debut at the age of 12, making him the youngest player in the over a century-old history of India’s top first-class tournament. Not only does he represent Biihar in Ranji, but he has also been playing in the India U-19 side.
In the final stages of Day Two of the auction, the Royals and Delhi Capitals got into a bidding war for the 13-year-old. The bid rose from the base price of Rs. 30 lakh to 1.10 crore by Rajasthan, at which point Delhi conceded as Suryavanshi is now a Royal.
Just a day before the auction, on Saturday, Vaibhav made his Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy debut for Bihar against Rajasthan. In what was otherwise a disappointing batting show for his team, the teenager opened for his side and scored 13 off 6 before being dismissed by Deepak Chahar.
But people new to his talents want to see his batting exploits; they must check out his fantastic 100 in the first of two unofficial Test matches against Australia U-19. Suryavanshi scored 104 runs in just 62 balls in the first inning of that match before getting run out.
Speaking about the 13-year-old signing, RR head coach Rahul Dravid opened up about why the team went after him in the auction.
“I think he’s got some really good skills, so we thought it might be a good environment for him to grow in. Vaibhav just came to our trials, and we were really happy with what he saw,” said Rahul.
Dravid also revealed how Vaibhav impressed the scouts and selectors during trials in Nagpur, revealing,
“In Nagpur, he was asked to score 17 runs in one over. He hit three huge sixes off the first three balls that he faced.
Vaibhav Suryavanshi became the youngest player to enter the IPL auction, breaking the record of Afghanistan spinner Allah Ghazanfar, who entered the auction for the 2024 season at the age of 15. Now 16 years old, the Afghan bowler has been picked up by the Mumbai Indians, making him the second youngest player to be picked in the league.
