Siraj is one of the best and most high-profile pacers in India across all formats, playing for the Indian Cricket Team in Test and limited-overs cricket. So, it came as a surprise that his long-time franchise, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, released him ahead of IPL 2025.
RCB retained three players before the auction: Virat Kohli, Rajat Patidar, and Yash Dayal. And with just three retentions, many of their big name players were released, but none were more synonymous with the franchise like Siraj.
Having made his IPL debut in 2017 for his hometown franchise Sunrisers Hyderabad, the 30-year-old fast-bowler was signed by RCB in 2018 after promising appearances in the league and in domestic cricket. And for the next eight years, he emerged as the Royal Challengers’ most consistently good bowler.
For a franchise known for their batting across seasons, Siraj is their third-highest wicket-taker, scalping 83 victims in 87 games with an average of 31.44 and an economy of 8.6. And while he was not the most consistent player in the side, he won his team the game almost single-handedly on many occasions.
So, after a long and memorable stint with one of the most popular franchises in the IPL, Mohammed Siraj entered the auction for the first time since 2018 and was scooped up by the Gujarat Titans for Rs. 12.75 crore, making him one of the most expensive pacers in the IPL 2025 mega auction.
With Siraj arguably being the second-most popular player in RCB after Virat Kohli, fans were naturally disappointed to see him leave. Soon after being sold, the pacer took to Instagram to share an emotional video of his time with the Bengaluru franchise.

However, the Titans camp saw all this in a different light, thrilled to have an ace pacer in their squad. One of the people who was excited by the signing was Afghani leg-spin Maestro Rashid Khan, who was retained No. 1 by Gujarat. Commenting on the original post,
“Ab tu hamara huaaaaa (Now you are ours),” Rashid said in a joking manner.
But it was not all sunshine and rainbows, especially for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, who wouldn’t have been too happy to let a franchise legend leave. The team’s official Instagram account commented this under the post,
“Dear Miyan Magic, you’ve been a superstar, an inspiration and pure joy, both on and off the field. From the time you debuted in the RCB colours in 2018, to that magical year in the UAE and up until our last match of 2024, you always gave your 100%, and that’s something nobody can take away from you. No matter where you are, we’ll only have love and warmth for you. We will miss you, Siraj. And we know the entire 12th Man Army will, too.”
As stated earlier, Mohammed Siraj didn’t come cheap for the Titans, as he was sold for Rs. 12.25 crore. The franchise had to get into bidding wars with the Chennai Super Kings and the Rajasthan Royals to finally get their man.
