After three brief outings in England, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has truly arrived in international cricket as he blasted an 18-ball half-century in the 1st T20I against Zimbabwe.
The young left-hander had made his T20I debut in England, replacing Sanju Samson at the top, but failed to cross 15 in any of his three knocks.
Sooryavanshi now has the opportunity to play his first full series for India as the IND vs ZIM three-match T20I series kicked off on Thursday in Harare. And in the opening fixture of the series, the southpaw proved that he belongs to international cricket, taking down the Zimbabwean bowlers with nonchalant ease.
The Indian bowlers had restricted the hosts to a below-par total of 125 after skipper Shreyas Iyer, who is searching for his first win as India’s T20I captain after six losses in the UK, won the toss and elected to bowl first.
As he had done throughout the IPL 2026, Sooryavanshi was expected to dominate the Zimbabwe bowlers, and he did it to great effect.
After scoring one run off his first three balls, Sooryavanshi teed off. He hammered the experienced Richard Ngarava for 6, 4, 6 to get going in the second over of the chase.
Abhishek Sharma was dismissed in the third over by Blessing Muzarabani, but that didn’t faze Sooryavanshi one bit as he thumped Brad Evans, another experienced Zimbabwe pacer, for a four and a six.
Sooryavanshi’s biggest test of the IND vs ZIM 1st T20I came when he faced Muzarabani, a tall bowler with plenty of success behind him, in the 4th over. The Indian opener came out with flying colors in this clash, smoking Muzarabani for two fours and a six.
Ishan Kishan’s three fours in the sixth over helped India close off the powerplay at the score of 66/1, effectively sealing off the match, with Sooryavanshi bashing 48 runs off 17 balls.
Sooryavanshi raised his maiden international half-century off the first ball of the 7th over, sent down by Ngarava, by running a couple of runs. He celebrated this milestone with his trademark ‘A’ symbol with his fingers.

During the IPL, Sooryavanshi revealed that the ‘A’ celebration he does with his fingers is a tribute to his mother, Aarti. “It was actually dedicated to my mother. Her name starts with ‘A’. I really didn’t want to reveal it earlier as it was personal. But I’d like to continue with this,” Vaibhav had explained.
His knock, though, was cut short immediately as he edged a wider ball from Ngarava straight to Ben Curran at deep thirdman. He walked off to a standing ovation from the crowd assembled at the Harare Sports Club.
With this – a 18-ball fifty – Sooryavanshi, at the age of 15 years and 118 days, broke the legend Sachin Tendulkar’s record for the youngest batsman to hit a half-century in international cricket among Full Member nations. Tendulkar notched up his maiden fifty-plus score in Test cricket in 1989 at the age of 16 years and 213 days against Pakistan.

Sooryavanshi is also now the youngest to hit a 50-plus score in international cricket. Nepal’s Kushal Malla previously held this record for achieving his feat at the age of 15 years and 340 days in an ODI match against the USA in 2020.
Further, he is the only one to do it at an age younger than 16 in T20I cricket across all teams. Previously, it was Gibraltar’s Louis Bruce who was the youngest T20I half-centurion, doing it at 16 years and 56 days in 2021 against Malta.
Meanwhile, India have romped home by 7 wickets in the IND vs ZIM 1st T20I, handing Iyer his maiden victory as the T20I captain.
